I aint using the touchpad a lot I have to say, roughly 1h max per day, but the times I have used it I didnt encounter any unusual behavior.
Did anybody update their bios with the latest on support site?
-
I purchased a G73SW at the end of January through Amazon. I just found out about the recall via this site (Amazon has not notified me, not sure if they are supposed to). Does anyone know if it's being done through the reseller, or do I call ASUS directly for an RMA?
-
First try to contact amazon for a refund if you want, if not contact one of the asus centers near you (phone nrs. provided on the asus sandybrige support sites) for a rma or whatever they offer.
-
I use the touchpad exclusively, and there is the occasional time where it will glitch out but they are not frequent. Mostly it is film on top of the pad capacitively coupling to the body of the laptop, which registers as a static finger touch. You notice it when you actually use the pad as it tries to recognize multitouch events. The tray icon will show you this is what's happening when it occurs.
I've found a light cleaning with some dilute isopropyl alcohol and a sensitivity tweak really improves things. High humidity also aggravates the problem.
In contrast, my old Sager NP8660 had a terrible touchpad... it would get totally unusable for hours at a time and only register a single direction (X or Y) or jump all over the screen without any touch. So while this touchpad has the occasional issue, it is still not nearly as bad as I've seen. -
-
So, in the end, users will receive replacement laptops or motherboard changes for the laptops?
Here in craplandia where I live, the only Asus certified center said that they can only replace the motherboard. Guess that's the only way to go right? Since I cant ship it back to the US where I bought it from, how can I verify that indeed the new mobo is not affected by the issue? -
Got my notice yesterday that ASUS has the replacement G73SWs in and is ready to start the swap process. Woohoo!
-
You have been confirmed to receive a replacement laptop not a motherboard replacement?

I was wondering if the CPU 2630 is worth upgrading to 2720? A lot of Asus dealers are charging $400-$500 for this. Sager dealers however, are charging $160? Why the large difference? Easier to change CPU on the Sager?

First post.
ProStar (in California) has the SW with the updated chipsets for $1,677.
I'm sure others (further west) will follow soon, as will other countries. -
-
Not much different than getting the stock G73SW and later upgrading the CPU. (which I may do at some point, but I'd go from the 2630 to the 2820) -

Gotta say, having just read the whole AW M17x R3 forum, I am a little jealous over the 6970M.
-
-
Actually, I was standing on my head when I wrote that, but I'm glad you guys can read between the lines... -
In all seriousness though, I am still leaning towards the SW, sure the 460 without optimus isn't as good as a 6970 (minus 3D that I would never use) or a 460 with optimus. The 460 is still more card than I need for my occasional gaming. I just don't upgrade often so I would like the SW to be the best if could have been. And for me the M17x is the exact opposite I want a laptop to look like. -
What kind of battery life are you getting g73sw owners with wifi on and just doing office apps or surfing the net (not gaming)????

Browsing the web at 50% brightness and really pretty independent of the keyboard backlight I get about 3.5 hours now with the new Seagate Momentus XT firmware. Before that I usually got around 4H.
I wiped windows when I got the laptop so I don't have the P4G utils. -
This may have been answered a bunch of times but I don't believe I have read anything regarding the after market upgrading of the SW's stock 460M to a 485M.
It would be nice to have the option a couple years down the road when the price drops. I am guessing the larger power consumption of the 485M makes this impossible?
My bad... found it here:

So far the new G73SW has not shown a single problem, it has been running 10 Deg.C cooler then my G73jh. and it,s not locked up like my G73jh did until I turned off all the power saving items. I am not sure that had anything to do with it stopping the lock ups, maybe I am just in hopes it was.

Hey guys I just joined up and I had a quick question. I was wondering where I could purchase another HD cage so I can add another HD to this laptop
Thanks -
What should I buy? G73SW from xoticpc or bestbuy, or the basic AW M17xR3
My budget is $ 1,500.00
Bestbuy offers G73Sw for $ 1,499.00 with:
500 GB HDD more (it has 1TB 7200rpm HDD)
Blueray reader
-> NO = Bluetooth + ASUS Targus Backpack + ASUS ROG Mouse
xoticpc offers G73Sw for $1,502.76 with
Bluetooth
ASUS Targus Backpack
ASUS ROG Mouse
-> No = Bluray reader + only 500 GB 7200rpm
Except for the things I mentioned, I believe everything else is the same.
So which do you think should it be.
I have a relative who stays in CA and she would be buying it for me.
I formerly own an MSi GX640 and Im through with its hot fan blowing in my right hand while holding an external mouse.
Plus, can anybody confirm if the G73Sw model still has its notorious, G73 Keyboard + Touchpad issues?
ORRRR Should I just buy the $1,499.00 Alienware R3
With the changing keyboard lights
HDMI in
and the bragging rights. lawl
-> but without blueray + only has 1680x900 monitor + no bag + no mouse + only has 320 GB HDD. -
I don't understand your Best Buy price of $1500.
-
Get the one from Xoticpc. Bestbuy charges tax so i'ts basically out of your 1500 range, Sama as the alienware.

Link here
$22.50, looks like they're out of stock at the moment. -
Hullo. Brand new here with the 3DE version up and running. Appreciated having this thread to use in my buying decision.
It wasn't clear to me whether the 3DE version came with the mouse and backpack. It does. 3D goggles were also included. -

I use a wireless mouse and key board and have a backpack.
So the Best Buy G73SW with the Seagate 750 7200 rpm HD. and 8 Gb of system RAM also the Nvidia graphic chip at $1200 worked great for me.
Also if the price drops within 45 days I get a price match. -
XoticPC, Y U NO TELL ME TO WAIT A DAY TO ORDER?
I hit your site on Monday looking for a G73SW-A1, the chat rep said you were out of stock so I ordered from pro-star.com as they had them. Tuesday I go back to look at something and you have the laptop listed as in stock!
Not a big deal really since pro-star already shipped, just would have rather given business to you guys as you are active here and provide great support. -

Sqweeeee! New laptop should be here tomorrow!
-
Just got mine yesterday and it is one sweet machine!
Are there any new drivers for this baby? -
I have a huge request to the people who are now in posesion of the new revision G73SW. Put a print screen of the following command in an elevated cmd prompt.
Code:(start -> type cmd -> right click and select run as administrator)
Code:wmic idecontroller get deviceid
I am interested only in the rev_xx part.
If you get a rev_04 means that your mobo is a B2 revision and affected by the chipsetbug.
I kindly ask someone with a new revision laptop to post a screen shot so others can see the rev_xx id of the revised motherboards.
I am asking this because there are countries where a replacement laptop is not available and users (myself included) have to have our motherboards replaced and I need to reassure myself that I will indeed get a new revision motherboard.
Thanks! -
While I don't own a G73SW and therefore can't help you with your request, I thank you for that tip. I hope to get a Sandy Bridge machine soon and will be anxious to check that out.

Bummer, got the laptop and everything is great except the spacebar. It's all smooshy and doesn't work half the time.

@ekinnee that sucks, if you think it feels like the metal bar is out of place you can try taking the spacebar keycap off carefully and realigning it if you're comfortable with that kind of thing.
You can alternatively return the entire machine, or register for your warranty at ASUS Member Login and try to convince them to cross-ship a keyboard to you. If you bought from a reseller (one of the ones that frequents this forum, not a bigbox like bestbuy or huge retailer like amazon) your best bet is to be in contact with them since they may be able to give you better treatment. Replacement keyboards can also be found for around $35 on ebay and parts stores. The one from the G60/G51 series fits the G73 but isn't exactly the right color finish (matte black vs shiny grey on the G73), although it has a bit better feel IMHO since it's less squishy.
Good luck! -
Just popped the bar off, it was the little metal bar in there. Thanks!
