I believe you can only turn off the two side lights on the back of the lid. I've played around with mine and those seem to be the only lights that turn off.

    ok thanks for the reply.

Hihi, thank you very much. You paid me a very charming compliment on my bad Eng skill.

Yes, I have managed well, right? :)

My coworker's maternal uncle ship it to me, and I must pay more ~ 300$ for this service :mad2:

CPU, yes. GPU, not quite. You *might* be able to use a video card from another ASUS laptop, but there is still possible compatibility issues with the VBIOS.

After buying this rig for $999 from BB, I still haven't opened this puppy up. Since today is the 14th day from the date of purchase, I have to decide if I'm going to keep it.

What would you guys recommend? Is it a keeper at that price point, or should I hold off a few months for a better value?

If you need a laptop, open it up and use it. If you can wait another few months, do that instead. This was an awesome deal and you probably won't find anything similar for another few weeks.

    Hi guys,

I miss the offer, and I'm now SO PISSED!

I wonder if you know when BB is going to make a new deal at 999 bucks, so I won't let it go this time...

The problem with notebooks is that they get 'obsolete' quickly. You bought one that has very good specification, especially for the price. Will something come out that is better? Sure. The point is, there is always something better coming out, and if you keep on holding off buying one just because of that, you will never have a laptop.

My advice would be just to keep it. You bought it for a great price, and I seriously doubt you can find something else that is better for a while. The CPU is upgradeable, and nVidia is not going to release anything evolutionary, so the 9800M GS will be one of the fastest laptop cards for quite some time.

I'm sure if you wait, they'll have it on sale again. The P-7811FX was on sale multiple times until it was discontinued.

Good to know i'm not the only one with the GPU misunderstanding.
CPU-Z, DirectX, Everest and Online stuff show GeForce 9800M GT (instead of 9800M GS, as stated on sticker).

BTW; I think you missed the USB 2.0 port next to the power adapter jack huh ;)

Also GPU is possible to upgrade: it is in a MXM slot! The CPU i don't know... Are you sure that the CPU is upgradable??

@DarknessEcko: they shows a GT because the database are old, but I have opened the notebook and it is a GS

Upgradeable between ASUS laptops, perhaps. Upgradeable through any MXM card? No.

The ASUS module cards looks MXM, but in they're using a 'reversed' MXM connector. The only exception to this are their whitebooks, but all their mainstream laptops have the reversed connector. My ASUS A8jp was like this, and it's not any different with the G50.

In the BIOS, change the SATA to IDE instead of AHCI, or use nLite to slipstream the PM45 chipset drivers into the XP installation.

That's probably not something you should be asking on this site. I suggest changing the option in the BIOS, it's easier and quicker.

Would it be overkill me me to purchase this notebook if I'm not gaming? I'm going to use it at work for internet and email. Then take it home everyday for a desktop/TV tuner PC. It seems like a good deal but it seems I can get what I need in a $700 Dell from best buy. But I'd like something that'll last a few years. My desktop now is 5 years old and I'd like to upgrade.

Yeah definitely overkill. You could definitely get away with a mid-range graphics card (9600m) and still play all modern games on medium settings, and have better battery life than this one. Look for an entertainment PC rather than a gaming one, it'll suit you better.

there are other asus models at best buy better suited for your needs if your set on a asus laptop.

on the other hand, dell, apple, any other main brands are not bad at all

Thanks for the responses. I wasn't really set on an Asus, I just saw this with all it's features for a low price and was drawn to it. I'm trying to stay under or right at $1000 so any Mac is out of the equation. I'm going to research some more and hopefully make a decision soon. My work computer is about to bite the dust.

I would have you know that I bought this laptop before Christmas, and its borders are HUGE. I can safely say that they're are like 2.5" on the top and 2" on the sides and the bottom. Is there any way to replace the screen with a 17"?

This notebook has a 16:9 ratio screen which is equivalent to an HDTV. This means widescreen movies generally take up more of the screen, but also means that you're looking at a different range of sizes. 17" is part of the 16:10 aspect ratio screens. As a quick listing off the top of my head:
    16:10= 12.1", 13.3", 14.1", 15.4", 17"
    16:9= 15.6", 16", 17", 18", 18.4"

As you can see, 16:9 seems to be much less standardized at the moment. My point is that you can't really replace a screen of a different size or aspect ratio with the one already there. You'd have to do some heavy modding to fit a different size screen.

Nolem, yes the G50Vt-X1 does have raid capability, it has two hard drive compartments, but only one is used.

I'm getting this laptop with a T9600 processor, will this help with games much?

    Edit:

Is there anyone who did real game performance tests yet?

When I get mine I'll def do some of these!

 WOW! Those are huge borders... I've heard that from someone else, he said that it was really annoying to look at :p But then again I have to see that for myself. I'm going to BestBuy and get me there one (if I like to agree with the bad border situation...)

Oh, there is something else I wonder what is the difference really about:
    The ASUS G50VT-X6 from newegg

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16834220483

And the ASUS G50VT-X1 (this one) from BestBuy

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...Q?skuId=9050279&type=product&id=1218012519873

The CPU from the G50VT-X6 has better CPU (not by much though), it costs $300 more, has the orange color and not the "cool design" on the back. Just wondering, I seem to have a hard time selling my 2 other ones. And I'm afraid the X1 is going out of stock pretty soon at BestBuy.
    The Gateway FX P-7805u sold out 3 days ago there, that's why I'm worried and I need a back-up plan for getting a laptop. :D I can't live without my laptop :D :D :D

    THX again guys!!! :p :p :p

I've asked a few times and got only a few answers: I'm still up in the air over getting the Gateway FX P-7805u, risking the lower res screen, or going with the Asus G50VT-X1. Either way, I'm going to be getting one. Being a Gateway, it worries me a bit because I've heard they are not as good as other companies, including Asus. Anyone have anything to persuade or dissuade me away from this laptop or the other? Anyone regret their purchase?

nicolasqueen, The new Fx gateway model is actually much improved from the first one, I was going to get the P-7811FX but it seemed to be quite unstable, there was many problems with it such as huge color bleeding, hard drive failures, the computer was falling apart, but with the new model, by the way I'm seeing the forum, it's actually quite good.

I'd still go with the Asus, for a more portable package, but that's just me, it's also on sale for $1050.00 at best buy.

    Hey guys,

I've been reading this topic for like 2 months and have a few questions.

First, how is the 15.6'' screen for games ? Isn't it too small with a 1368*768 resolution ? I mean the graphics display are not too big ?

I went to BB and thought it was maybe too small. I couldnt try any game though.

Second, to ShadowKat, I'm hesitating between the X1 at BB and the X6 at newegg.

The differences are the processor : P8600 vs P8700 AND the screen !

    15,6'' with a 1368*768 native resolution (X1) Vs 15,4'' 1680*1050 (X4).

So it depends if you wanna play games on a 15,6 or 15,4 with a higher or lower reso....

Btw, I think $300 is worth it for these differences betweern the X1 and X6....

Can anyone give me somr arguments pro and con ? Thx a lot guys.

Oh and another thing, ok we're on the Asus forum but have you heard about the MSI Gt627 ?

The specs are prettu closed of the G50 but with a blu ray drive etc...

i think you cant beat the x1 at $1049 or when it goes on sale for $999//but if your paying full price for the x1 $1249 or whatever it is..then ill probably go for the x6..also the x6 offers the 2 year warranty and the 1 year accidental...not the x1 from BB.

I bought my x1 for 1049..couldnt beat that.
