Just back from holidays where I picked up my Asus Eee from my mom's place. While there I did the necessary upgrades. Here's my report...

1.) Upgraded memory using Kingston 1GB stick (after disabling Boot Booster). No problems and 2GB recognized by system.

2.) Prior to holidays I created a bootable USB key containing Windows 7 Professional. I tried using this, but no luck. After setting the BOIS to boot from USB, it would not run the setup. It would just boot into Windows. So, I decided to just run the SETUP.EXE from the USB key and this worked. During the process it detects the older version and renames it to WINDOWS.OLD. I continued with the installer and it got to the partitions part. There were 4 partitions listed. I have these written down, but I don't have the notes with me right now. I decided to keep the partitions in tact. The install completed with no issues and I then deleted the WINDOWS.OLD folder (but you need to be logged into the Administrator account to do this). I now had a clean Windows 7 Professional OS with no bloatware.

3.) I then added in the neccesary drivers for TouchPad, Video, etc. that Windows 7 did not add. The system works like a little trooper.

4.) I then added/configured external devices. I purchased the Asus DVD burner and this installed real easy and works like a charm. I also purchased a Logitech wireless mouse. Again, easy to install and works great.

5.) I then loaded the applications I generally use to do my work. Mostly web development.

5a.) GIMP (Open source graphics editor): Installed fine. It took a few minutes to configure itself on the initial startup, but then loads fairly quickly and works fine thereafter.

5b.) WAMP Server 2 (Open source web development tools): Installed fine and starts right up. If you run Skype on the same system you need to adjust the ports being used by Skype in order for both Skype and the WAMP server to run together.

5c.) Skype: Installed the latest version of Skype and it works fine. The speakers, mic and video tests were all successful. Tried calling a friend in the UK and it worked great, although Skype does mention that the computer may be too slow to properly run. But I did not notice any problems.

5d.) Pokerstars.Com: Installed fine and runs great.

5e.) Crimson Editor (Open source text editor): Installs and runs great.

5f.) Firefox: Again, installed fine and runs great.

Personal Opinion: I know this system is no where near the performance power of the Tx1000, but for a Netbook I find this model to be quite a little performer. I have yet to install Microsoft Office or Visual Studio on it yet, but for what I mainly use it for, it works great. I'm not overly disappointed with this computer. It runs cool, very lightweight, the touchscreen is very responsive, speakers have good sound. My only one gripe would be the screen dimensions. I find I have to scroll quite a bit on many websites, but other than that...

I moved to Ireland 5 years ago. My holiday was back to the States to the New England area to visit my mom and friends (lovely 104 degree heat).

When processing the settlement I just used my mom's address for the shipment of the Asus, so it was waiting for me when I got there. I also pre-ordered the Asus DVD player/burner and the Kingston memory chip, so they were waiting for me also.

My complete upgrade project only took me around 2 hours. Everything went very smoothely.

Also forgot to mention that I installed Avira Anti Virus. This installed fine and seems to be running as expected.

That's cool... not the weather here in the US, but moving to Ireland and having everything go smoothly with your upgrades. Enjoy your T101MT!

    Thanks for creating this thread!

I joined this forum just because I came across this site while researching the NVIDIA settlement issues and thought, how timely!
Thank you for taking the time, djc89, for posting such useful tips.

I had an HP TX1320 and opted for the ASUS EEE replacement. I just received it.

Before I shipped the HP back, I removed the HD, the optical drive, and the memory. Thanks to your advice, I easily added 1GB of the memory to the new netbook and it booted right up. It's a shame this little fellow maxes out at 2GB.

I would like to re-use the TX1320 HP optical drive if that makes sense. From what I can tell I will need to buy an enclosure and interface cable so that I can plug it in to a usb port. I was wondering if anyone knows what type of interface the optical drive uses? (The HP spec sheet says that the hard drive is SATA, but says nothing about the optical drive. The connector on it, though smaller than IDE, looks like it has many pins like an IDE interface, as opposed to SATA). Of course, if the parts + shipping are > new drive at Best Buy, I will just do that.

Welcome to NBR Forum, DontPanic11. We're glad you joined us. Sorry the NVIDIA Class Action was the reason... what a total joke that turned out to be.

You can get a USB optical drive enclosure from newegg.com at a very low price. Post a picture of the connector on the back and we can confirm that for you if there is any question on the interface, but it would be unlikely that it's not SATA.

    Thank you Mr. Fox!
I looked all over, in spec sheets and part number searches, but cannot find the info on the DVD drive from the TX1320. This info is hard to find. I have attached a picture of the connector, perhaps you can help. It does not look like SATA to me, but I do not have much experience with notebook optical drives.
What do you think this is?

Replying to my own post... never mind, I finally found a picture of an IDE drive connector and that is what this is.
Next steps - back up the disk that came with the netbook and upgrade the OS. I am wondering if it is worth the effort to upgrade the disk - either a faster HD or possibly a low end SSD.
Just playing around with this thing in the short time that I have had it, it seems very slow. I wish they would have just fixed my TX1320!

Sorry I did not see your post, but you are correct about that being an IDE interface. Glad you got that figured out right away.

With a maximum capacity of 2GB of RAM and an Atom processor, it's going to be sluggish and there is no way to fix that. An SSD might make it feel peppier, but system resources are so low that it will never be fast.

Anyone interested in adding the internal bluetooth,,,,,,,, it can be done, but I recommend a USB dongle at this point.

I ordered the bluetooth adapter from ebay for $20, but it doesn't come with the correct cable. I hunted and hunted for the cable, but couldn't find it, so I just soldered the wires to the board. It does work, and works perfectly, but even with my YEARS of experience soldering, I feel I had a bit of luck with a successful solder job. At some point, the cable should be available, and at that time adding it would be pretty simple, but until then, I can't recommend doing what I did unless you are very experienced at soldering. It's a bit like trying to solder a hair, to another hair, while the hair is laying with many other hairs.... Here is a picture of what I did, but keep in mind, the size of the connector is about 1/4" long, and there is 5 solder connections made, and 6 pins in that connector...

Sorry, these pics are from my phone, and it's not the best at this macro stuff.

Notice how small it is, that is one of the screws holding the laptop together.

This picture makes it look big, but notice the size of the screw head. There is about 4 connections in the size of that screw head. You better have a good tip on your soldering iron.

This one is pretty blurry, but it shows where I mounted the board.

    Onboard bluetooth enabled in bios.

Notice it says HP bluetooth module. The board I have was pulled from an HP netbook, but is the same model number as we need. I really hate the fact that it says HP considering all we have been through with them...

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I wondered if anyone will attempt to use the Windows 8 Consumer Preview on this machine?

I received my replacement unit, however I haven't even unboxed it yet in my disgust at getting this.

I may however consider using it as a test bed to try out Windows 8.

I just got mine back from warranty repair on the top 1" of the touch screen quit working. Simple quick turn around, but I have probably used mine not more than 48 total hours and that happened already. Besides that the only other issue is the screen hinge is very weak. It works good for what it is, but I sure do miss features I was used to having.
