Ok just my luck, 3dmark froze up. Im going to lower the gpu core to 500...if that doesnt work ill lower it down in 10mhz increments. If I get back to 475 on the core, ill lower the mem to 475 and start with the core at 500 or something like that. Regardless, im testing to see if the gpu overclock was the culprit.
EDIT: My reasoning for suspecting the gpu overclock is that when I restarted after freez up my desktop res was at 640x480 and the gpu back to 475/400.

SUPRISE!
3DMark06 score: 3576 (1280x1024)
e6700 2.66 overclocked to 2.93ghz
gpu overclocked to 500 core/500 mem
3gb corsair DDR2-667 (2gb + 1gb)
Nvidia Forceware 101.19 (directly from Asus G1S download page at Asus website)
Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bit edition
All other drivers directly from suppled cd
Fresh install with NO changes to vista features or settings.
Desktop resolution 1680x1050
CPU, gpu, and ram was kept cool with cpu cores at 44-47 degrees celsius, gpu at 49 degrees celsius?
Is that enough info? -
could be better still. Good job thought
-
Swoley! You are the man! You have saved countless people hours of frustration and heartache! Can you run it looped for us? To make sure its stable over time? ][V][IKE
-
NOW, i have to find a newer driver that will support the 8600M GT AND not block overclocking....reasoning being that on my 8800 GTX in my desktop, all the drivers after 101.70 give much better 3dmark06 results....(trust me ive tried a ton of drivers). If the 3dmark06 scores are higher the game performance shoudl also be higher. Right now im going to find some newer drivers, then ill test some games.
-
yes please run it over time looping
-
Sweet! I cannot wait til Monday (Again)! I was getting very disappointed. ][V][IKE
-
Keep in mind I cant do this under normal circumstances or the computer would freeze up due to the overclocking as previously stated. This is why I need some input from other c90 owners so ill know if overclocking is possible on theirs without it locking up. I need them to go into gaming mode AND use cpu-z to make sure its actually overclocking. While I find drivers you guys can bother alex and vicious, and whoever about that.
-
Im not going to bother running it over time because like I said I had to so something to keep everything cool...its not normal circumstances. Im exploring how to better the performance with new drivers/tweaks so that if someone says they can get it to overclock without it locking up, they can use the drivers i used/tweaks and get an even better score! oh yeah!
-
Sounds like a plan.

The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Did any1 elses from gentech ship? I ordered 3 weeks ago and mine should have shipped today.

I don't now yet

seriously, guys...I don't know what the problem is. The only heat issue I have is the bottom left palmrest gets really toasty. No slowdown, no crashing. I have the CPU OC'd to 2.93 and the VidCard at 475/550 Core/Mem. 3648 on
those setting, I think I could push more too. -
alexonfyre, are you using a notebook cooling pad thing ? if so which one
-
Alex please read my previos post and try the G1S drivers. I had no idea you got 3648 already. That GREAT. and yeah are you using a cooling pad?
-
Now testing with forceware 158.45 with modded .inf file to make it recognize 8600M GT. Will be done in a few minutes...
-
OH WOW! the fps are MUCH BETTER now! Im looking forward to the final score this time!
-
Keep it up
-
Mine shipped through GenTech on Weds. 3 day shipping to FL so I will not get it until Monday. When will your review come out Alex? ][V][IKE

Getting better.... -
I have a feeling that the time I did 510 on the core and it locked up was a fluke...so im going all out this time. Ive found a modded version of forceware 163.11 beta (newest driver out) and am going to try it. Hopefully it doenst block overclocking and ill run with 510 core and 550 mem since alex was able to get higher on the mem. If it works ill move on into other thigns...if it doesnt ill keep trying different core/mem until it makes it through the test.

Hey everyone, just ran 3dmark06 and got pretty much the same results as everyone else.
(1280x1024) - 2994
e6600 - 2.4 ghz - standard mode
2gb g.skill DDR2 667 1+1gb
vista ultimate
8600gt
all drivers from CD -
Ok, im trying to test forceware 163.11. It installs with the modded .inf file but everything i chage the gpu clocks in ntune or rivatuner they change right back...anyone know how to bypass that???
-
swoley great work on your c90. I really wish I had mine so I could contribute, I feel like such a tool not being able to help. Also, so ur work with the new drivers and overclocking that got those 3dmark scores is a result of your cooling method right? Because otherwise it would lock up from overheating
-
While I wait on a response to that last question, Im going to get 162.22, 162.18, and 162.15 (gonna give this one another try) together and try them later...

The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah feel the same way. Though gentech still has not shipped mine. I still have supreme commander and company of heroes sitting here ( big rts fan) so I will have fraps done and such for those games if people are interested.

You and I are kindred spirits Forerunner, the first game I plan on playing on my new lappy is Supreme Commander. I was a TA fanatic long ago and can't wait to play its "spiritual successor."
Sorry for being OT. Keep up the great work Swoley -
The Forerunner Notebook Virtuoso
TA was a great. Supreme Commander builds on that and the new sup com is coming out. Company of heroes is based on warhammer dark crusade another fine game and am looking forward to that and the sequel to that is coming out soon too. Its a great time to be a pc owner great games coming out this fall season.
Agree with the kindred spirits comment. -
While im thinking about it....does anyone else know of a way I can find out if the gpu is using DDR3 or DDR2 OTHER than rivatuner. I feel its about to get important...

NO GPU OVERCLOCK (forceware 163.11 wont let me)

It would probably get between 3600 and 3700 if I could overclock gpu based on my findings today.... -
I think i mentioned it b4 to forerunner but I'll say it again (sry don't mean to tease you but I was just playing it) Sup Com is an amazing game and if you love RTS's you won't be disappointed at all. By the way if one of you gets your c90 b4 i do, which will most likely happen, can you post some fps for it. Thx.
-
well i'm off to the beach with my girlfriend for the week so good luck guys. Hopefully when I get back my C90 will be waiting and I can start to contribute instead of just trying to make theories about stuff in my head based on rumors and what other people have said. Like I said though thanks alot to everyone who has theirs and is working on fixing all the problems, your efforts are greatly appreciated.

I think V took off the ram sinks and found it to be GDDR2. ][V][IKE

All maxed out, Supreme commander gets from 15-20 FPS, pretty smooth for what it is.
-
you use a cooling pad alexonfyre? if so which
-
AlexOnFyre Needs to get back to work NBR Reviewer
I use the Tai Chi black anodized Aluminum Cooling Pad, but now I have it in the back office at work with the same settings, no problem. The important thing with the C90 is to prop the back end up to push the hot air from the CPU out and away (it has its own fan so you don't need anything like that.) The major heat pool on the C90 is on the CPU because it is the farthest away from the fans...also it is the CPU. just use a book or a block of wood or a paperweight underneath the back feet. Passive cooling is all you need because the Turbo Engine is really good at getting the air on top out. Anything to make the hot air rise into that is great.

That is music to my ears! Cant wait for the full review! M

thank you
/me waits mindlessly for his C90S to ship so far off
ordered on 7/12 -
Ok guys, the highest version of forceware that will allow gpu overclocking is 158.45. I will now go back to these drivers and try to clock the core/mem higher than 500/500. Regardless of wheter it works, I will then try Alex's method of cooling the laptop by proping the back end up. Will post results soon...
Also, the highest version of forceware that works without gpu overclocking is 163.11 which is the newest beta release for Vista. -
at swoley, from what i understand, the 512mb versions of the 8600gt are ddr2, and clocked alot lower than the 256mb gddr3 version.
8600gt 512- core 475, mem 400-450?<----ddr2
8600gt 256- core 475, mem- 700 x 2 <----gddr3 -

VERY nice Alex! Thanks for posting the FPS, even more kudos for posting FPS on THE game which is relevant to my interests. I personally finally decided on what my notebook is going to be and started a thread here in Asus for feedback on vendors, specs, etc. Finalizing the purchase tonight and tomorrow and I'm probably going to next-day ship it. I am through waiting and need a fully functional computer ASAP. My old-as-dirt Compaq 5100's integrated video card died two days ago and it's time to move on.
Truly glad to hear about your success with your C90. -
Well I almost said it would be better with ddr3 BUT. This guy/gal got around the same 3dmark scores as I did using the 158.45 drivers. They got 3250 at 475/400, I got 3152. They got 3860 at 600/462 and I got 3655 at 500/500...so it kinda balances out. It would appear that the cpu in the c90 is doing NOTHING AT ALL compared to mobile cpus as their test was with at T7300 2ghz........UGH!
EDIT: Actually im wrong....the shader scores are about the same on theirs and my test. My cpu score is higher though because of the 2.93ghz. Yet our overall scores are the same because the cpu score DOES NOT COUNT IN 3DMARK06! I forgot....SO..hmmm...i guess ill have to see if REAL game performance is better since thats where the cpu DOES count. -
could it be possible the cpu is using way too much power and everything else is suffering? just throwing this out there..
-
I really don't like this... -
I just tryed testing 158.45 at 515 core and 570 mem....the screen went black after I hit run test so.....ill try 510 core and 550 mem and be done with it. It will be done in a few minutes...
-
158.45 at 510 core and 550 mem NO GO. Now im going to go ahead and see what I can get using Alex method of proping the back end of the laptop up...
