Thanks Darrick, I'll use 208 for now.

*UPDATE*
there seems to be a BIOS update for A8jm just today
Version 211 2006/09/12 update
Description BIOS 211
1.For Yonah Celeron M 440, update microcode to M206EC54
2.Instant Fun function update
File Size 460.14 (KBytes) -
weird.... still no Merom support?
-
OK, ASUS should really stop releasing useless BIOS'. I just installed 211, and the so called Instant Fun function update doesn't do anything. The Instant On button still doesn't work. Also, the TPM support that was supposedly enabled in 210, still is non existent in 211..
I really don't know what their purpose is. I really expected them to release something with Merom support already, considering some other models already have them... grrrrr.. -
Heh, yeah I just came home from lectures and I was so excited...updated the BiOS and it STILL booted to Windows.
-
this is funny, but does anyone's touchpad pointer speed keep reverting to default? i seem to have to set it everytime >_>
-
i took out my keyboard to clean underneath it...altho i found it to be surprisingly clean, after putting it back in the flex on the left side seems to be gone...but now my PgDn, End & right arrow key at the bottom right hand corner make a wierd clonking sound argghhh so annoying any ideas? i'll updgrade to 211 why not
-
-
this is odd....i can't seem to find the bios update

There is... you have to go to it from the support site ( I just use the tw version: support.asus.com.tw/download )and select the A8Jm model, then use the Map tab, then expand the BIOS tree... . If you look under the Latest/All/BIOS tab, it won't be there yet.. not sure why, but it happens with all new released files.
-
hasnt anybody tried the new ATK drivers??? booohoooo
-
how is the 211 bios so far?
-
ProfessorChaos Notebook Consultant
as for the bios, since theres no significant changes im sticking with 210. -
im going back to 207 now
-
Ok, this is wierd, I've had it for less than 2 weeks and Mobilemeter shows battery wear @ 10%. Is this normal? I've only used the battery like 4 times.
-
the realness... try running the battery out (ie, till notebook shuts off)... then calibrate it from BIOS... see what wear it turns out to be....
-
Thanks, I;m draining it now. Do I Replug the adapter for calibration?
-
Yep, since your battery will be totaly out after draining no other way to do it hehehe
It should take a couple of hours for it to calibrate, so maybe just leave it running at night before you go to bed, should be finished in the morning. -
Phew! The wear level is back down to 2%, Thanks for all the help!
-
Ok, after the new ATK drivers, and 211 bios, num lock keeps locking, even though its been disabled in bios and registry. Once i login, num lock does not re-enable itself. What to do?
-
i didnt notice that hmm...the ATK drivers u installed were they under A8Jm or under the A8J ?
-
A8Jm portion of the site. I'll give both another shot then.
*edit* never mind, grub being a piece of crud -
So which version of the BIOS are you people using? 211 screws up the capslock LED for me.
-
-
I'm using 207, above that version and past the first five minutes, the fan's always running... So i'm staying on this one...
I don't see any reason to update right now.
bye,

Does 207's fan management provide a longer battery life? I noticed that my CPU idles at 48C instead of the 41C with 210.
-
I don't know about the battery life, I think the difference depends mainly on what you do with the computer : gaming, dvd, or only pdf reading...
bye -
Actually I've just installed the 211 version, well it's a good way to cool down your machine, my HD is now 36°C, it's about 40° with the 207, my cpu is 38° with the 211 and it's about 48/49 with the 207.
About the motherboard the 211 gives me 36°C, it's about 45°C with the 207.
The GPU is now 41°C with the 211, it's 10°C hotter with the 207...
According to me a good bios would be a kind of 211 with a fan which start on 50° then the CPU goes down to 40, the fan stop, etc...
bye -
i'm using 211 w/o any problems. i wish instantfun would work though
-
After much experimentation, I got 211 to work too. Turned out I just had to do a cold boot after the BIOS flash, and my capslock LED went back to normal.
Another thing I noticed is that the InstantFun LED now doubles as the NumLock indicator light. Weird.
Oh, and my CPU and HD idle temperatures are now 42C and 32C, respectively. The CPU temp actually went up a little bit after I upgraded from 210.
Edit: In response to gusto's post below: "Oh..." -

on a side note, does anyone remember of nero 6 was a separate cd? i cant seem to find it anywhere >_>
-
I'm pretty sure it was a seperate disc.
-
-
Hey does Fn+F1 work? I don't remember ever seeing it work, as i assume it should put the comp in sleep mode.
EDIT: Whoops, Dmedia disabled it from working. Fixed it. -
211 for me. -
yeah, for most people, running a constant fan will help them establish it as ambience.
It's like if you hear enough planes take off over your house, youll stop hearing it. -

any of you a8jm owners going to look into upgrading the gpu to the 7700 if it becomes available?
aparently asus sells the 7600 seperate for 155. Its possible the 7700 will go for around $200. -
stamar: Where can you find them though? Haven't seen any being sold in resellers..... dunno if the slight performance increase justifies the extra 200 ..

Anyone having trouble with the Hinge's on their A8Jm's
I have had mine for a month, and now I have about 4cms (about an inch and a half) of play in the hinges when the screen is opend. Anyone else experience the same?
I am very disapointed in this, its is what you would expect to happen to a cheap as chips compaq laptop after 12mths. I have definately treated it with care since I first got it.
Any one know a quick way to fix this? Im not sure I wan't to send it off for a warranty repair for the next week or so. -
Madness: Prob no quick way, but if you're feeling a bit technical.. look in page 8, posts no. 385 & 389, there's a disassembly guide and Atom fixed his own.
-
I've read some stuff about that : actually planes, traffic jam, etc, it's true your brain can make you forget the noise, but (and that's the point it's become technical for a non-native english ) your body is "under attack" anyway, you can unconsciously forget the noise is here, but it's there and it makes you "suffer"/tired despite it looks like it doesn't exist anymore.
What i'm saying concern important noises, such as quoted above, not laptop ones, but you get the idea
bye

I would suggest fixing it up, the lid of the laptop above where the hinges connect on my cracked a bit from the stress of the loose hinges.. I'll warranty it someday it's just a matter of the service centres being far away.. don't really want to mail away my primary computer.
BTW this wouldn't be a problem unique to Asus, EVERY laptop I've ever used has suffered the problem at one point. ( Dell d500,d600,d800, i8600, Sharp MV11, Fujitsu s6110 ). Same problem in all cases.. -
