well you don't have to ask this question ! only Vista alone, eats up all your 1Gb so any extra DDR would be just double horse power on multi tasking and even gaming, where a lot of HDD swapping occurs ! you don't need to see 3DMark scores either because the difference is eye-visible ;)

Has anyone figured out a way to disable the scroller on the touchpad? Its does not work very well and causes a interuption on the movement of the cursor...

it works well for me (although my brother always complain about it). in the synaptics setting you can either extend the size of the scroll or disable it. you can also disable the continous scroll. The amount of page it scrolls is directly related to how fast you slide your fingers over it. Scroll slowly and a smaller amount of scroll is achieved.

Hey guys, got a question. Last night when I've been playing games (Halo multiplayer and CoD2) the computer has crashed and shut off by itself, and this happened twice. Today I was playing CoD2 and it started stuttering so I had to escape the game. I ran Everest and saw the temperature was 86 deg Celsius, so all the trouble came from overheating. But I've played these two games a lot before, for hours on end and never had any trouble. Any ideas?

    I am puzzled.
I reinstalled vista from scratch on my a8js but my screen brightness seems to be stuck.
Installed all the drivers everything, new bios, p4gx... still the same.
when i press on fn+f5 or f6, it goes up or down by only one knotch... and stuck.
it works fine unless winxp or when there's no OS....
    anyone has any ideas?

yeah, it got like that for me a few times too, and I'm not really sure what causes it, but i get it with bios 211 and forceware 101.70, so I think it's one of them. I'm not really sure how I fixed, since i downgraded both bios and vga driver AND going in to the bios and turning the screen to the maximum. I did these steps at different times and also all at once, and in different order. It didn't work at first, then it magically fixed itself. I'm running bios version 210 and vga driver 101.40.

I found the problem, i downgraded to bios 210... and it's fine now.
One funny thing though, it works fine when returning from a sleep mode, but doesn't if it's a reboot or cold boot.

btw.. if it doesnt affect 3dmark, wouldn't it not affect gaming performance too?

well 3Dmark is just a tool.. on gaming you should have double gain from not using HDD swapping and from loading speed !

hi, im new here and i've been trying to install different versions of forceware. It seems that when you get past version 100+ brightness controls seem to be stuck. It only works after sleep mode.

Which one is the recommended version? Im using now 98.02 downloaded from the asus website.

You can stick with that driver, and if you are looking for newer version, you can check the Asus website.

Also many do use laptopvideo2go drivers, located here. They offers modified drivers and have an entire archieve of them.

    Greetings all,

I'm a noob here and own an asus a8js upgraded to vista with nvidia driver 7.15.10.9754. I have bios update 211 and all seems working fine except while playing oblivion the other day for 10 minutes the computer shut down and the bottom of the computer was a bit warmer than usual, turning the computer on again resulted in a quick shutdown before bios even runs, so I waited 10 minutes and then the computer worked fine. I realize this is an overheating issue and from what I'm reading on here maybe the bios 211 update causing it. I have tried downgrading to bios 210 but the vista flash utility won't let me flash an older bios. I unzipped bios 210 to the root of my C: drive and attempted to flash through the flash utility in bios but when choosing the C: drive it says "I/O error" on the bottom and I don't see any bios file available to choose. I'm not sure what to do now, should I just go back to XP and not mess with vista or is this not a vista issue. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance

    Ren

    thanks dinocol,
Yes the fan is clear since I open and clean it up periodically. It is to my understanding that there is only one fan on this unit correct, because I do hear the fan spinning, and when I push the computer by playing games the fan kicks in to a higher rpm. What concerns me is that twice now while playing games the computer shutdown after 8 minutes or so and the bottom of the computer was warmer then usual.

dinocol, you are right, I'm using the XTreme-G MobileForce VS 101.41 M6 from tweaks R us....... and the brightness is stuck indeed, downgrading bios to 210 fixed the problem. maybe I should stay with bios 211 and downgrade my nvidia drivers.

I'm also having problems with the fan and over heating. It happens regardless of which bios i use. It seems like the machine just forgets to turn on the fan. Sometimes when i boot up, i don't hear the fan spin... and 10min after of doing anything.... system just shuts down due to overheating. Other times... my fan is working at fulll speed...even if i put it in battery savings mode... doesn't change a thing... I'm not using NHC or anything else that might control the fan... and i'm using vista ultimate......
    anyone knows anything about this?

If you have searched the forum you would find some posts about the fan and temperature issue under the A8Js. It's not a problem of overheating, it's just a characteristic of the model: when you boot from cold the fan doesn't start working, and only kicks in at around 45º; after that it doesn't stop spinning anymore. To control this you can install NHC and these config files. I believe that the latest NHC is Vista 32bits compatible (not 64bits), although it seems to have some unfinished issues with the dynamic speed control under Vista but not under XP. I'm using XP with NHC and I don't have any problems. After a days work, using Office, Firefox, KIS, and some specialist programs my A8Js CPU temperature is stable at around 48º/49º depending on the room temperature, at a 2333 RPM (using the 105 NHC speed fan setting). I believe that the temperature without NHC installed, ie, with the Fan on the default 3200rpm (which isn't the full speed, but the speed when "On" with the factory defaults), is about 46º/47º with similar use. A difference of 2º/3º is negligible and doesn't impair the CPU life (in my opinion), and is worth the reduced noise.
As fot he overheating issue, that might in fact be a problem... You should call Asus and explain the problem

yeah... I just installed the new NHC from yesterday under vista. And the dynamic switching is not working at all. Also the screen brightness would get brighter for 2 secs and dim again every few secs, also if i changed the brightness, 2secs later it would change back to a "default" again. I even uninstalled p4g2x and still the same. So I just disabled the ACPI functions in NHC. And that solved the problem. The new NHC might not give BOD under vista, but it sure is bugged.
My cpu speed it stuck at 2GHz and fan blows at full speed with a temp of 85C. I think everything was fine when i had XP. Vista is screwed up...

Is RMClock capable of fan speed control? I've tried it several times but it doesn't detect the fan speed and doesn't allow me to control for fan speed...

i was very disapponted with the a8js after playing several games with it... games with dark lighting, like s.t.a.l.k.e.r. , looked really awful. the light leakage and the terrible viewing angle (only with the AUO screen) really made the black colours look really washed out, and as a result i had really a hard time seeing my way through. it was really disappointing, i thought i would enjoy gaming with the great 7700 card, but then the terrible screen just made that impossible..

What do you mean by only with the AUO screen? Have you tried other screens? Apparently there are 4 compatible screens for the a8js (AUO, CMO, LG, Samsung) and all are similar, although from those who have tried multiple screens the the order I listed above is from worst to best.

I think my CMO screen is superb but has a limited viewing angle, a common problem to varying amounts with all laptop screens of this size.

My new A8JS 024C comes with the AUO screen and I just watch my first DVD on it and there seems to be a large amount of light leakage from the bottom of the screen (about 1/2" of white wash that will not go away even if I turn brightness all the way down). Is this typical of the AUO screen and if so Can I contact ASUS for a screen replacement?

Quick question for you all regarding the NumLck on the keyboard.

I just bought a USB numbered keypad, and it has a numlock button on it. Unfortunatly when I select it, it also selects the numlock on the laptop keyboard which messes with my letters.

Is there a way to permanantly disable the numlock feature on my laptop keyboard (while not disabling the external USB keypad numlock function), because honestly, it drives me crazy. It happens way too often I boot up the system, open MS Word, start my work and after a few sentances, I have numbers inserted where the letter are supposed to be (annoying having to disable after startup because it often does not remember I disabled it on last shutdown). The other FN functions I like, just this NumLck is killing me.

    Please help. Thanks.

Hey, I have my A8JS-4S019C-A sitting on my Lap.
Last week I put it "to sleep" and for some reason, when i tried to wake it, It wouldn't "wake up". So doing what any normal person would do, i hit the power button and tried a fresh reboot.

    BUT
now i try and start it up, and it won't boot, not even to POST.

    What can i do?!?
I checked to see if the RAM was seated properly too

    -- Edit --
I will phone the service center tomorrow, and It will probably be an RMA.
If it is then i can get rid of that vista crap on it. lol

    -- Edit2 --
The Notebook is being couriered to the repair centre. thanks anyway

Just got my A8Js today and so far it's pretty nice!

However I noticed that I can open the screen by pulling it up (with little force) even though it's supposed to be opened wit the button/latch mechanism. (at first I didn't even notice that there was a latch!) Is this normal?

Also I got it with Windows XP Pro pre-installed. I noticed that it did have pre-bundled software but it seemed to be useful stuff (aside from a couple of programs such as Skype and Norton.) Is there any other "crapware" that I might want to remove from the installation?

Or you can try the free AOL Active Shield Antivirus which is a stripped-down version of Kaspersky. Not sure if it works with Vista.

I've noticed a couple of small scratches on the cover of my A8Js, even though I've only had it for less than a week. Is the lid of the A8Js known for scratching easily?

Also my keyboard seems to "curve" up a little around the F12 and Pause keys. Does everyone else's do this or might they have installed mine wrong?

    it scratches very easily

the curve might be a manufacturing error though. Mine does not.
