I don't see why not, however why not just get one of those battery packs, as the poster in the 1st page 1 post talks about? They sound like the way to go if you want/need longer than ~2.5 hours.

You could try different drivers. If you are using the Catalyst, switch back to the original ones provided by asus and see if it continues to happen, otherwise try upgrading to the catalyst and see what happens there as well. Catalyst is up to 7.3 now and I have been running them flawlessly since I got them. Do a search in the forums for them, someone posted a direct link from the asus page. Good Luck.

Update here is the direct link to the 7.3 drivers for XP: http://ati.amd.com/online/mobilecatalyst/

Does anyone know what firewire chip the a8jp uses?
I, too, use the 7.3 mobile cat's without issue. The first time I installed them I got an error when ccc would load. I uninstalled/installed the omegas and ccc worked, but something else was funky (I don't recall what, now). I uninstalled/installed the 7.3 mobile again and ccc worked just fine. It may have just been some other piece of software that I was missing during the whole reformat process (apci driver or something). I'll have to double-check the next time I reformat.
Also, what is the deal with the asus website? The support/download pages seem to load about 50% of the time. Japan seems to be about the only server that I can get consistent downloads from, too.

I think I posted about this problem earlier in the thread, but I'm going to go again.

My A8JP has been rebooting itself when I go into hibernation. Not an actually restart, more like it hibernates, then returns to my profile on Windows Media Center. I downloaded a hotfix I was linked to on Microsofts website about a hibernation problem for users with 1gig of RAM (Which I have), however I'm still having the problem. I've thought about upgrading to 2gigs of RAM, which I'm thinking may fix the problem, but I am unable to afford it currently.

Does anyone else have this problem, or know a solution? Everything else about my machine runs smoothly.

I have the same situation as yours. Once you found out how to fix this could you PM me? People suggested me to reinstall drivers, I did that but it still didn't work for me. Thanks !! ^^

First of all, lets try the easiest. Right click on the desktop and go to properties. Click on the screen saver tab. On the bottom of the screen is a Power button click that. Make sure on your power scheme is setup correctly. If you want to use mine, I have these options set. When Powered: turn off monitor after 15min, turn off hard disks never, and system standby never. When on battery, turn off monitor after 15min, turn off hard disk after 25min, and system standby after 1 hour. Then under the hibernate tab make sure you do not have that clicked. Out of curiosity have you guys formated or you still running the default asus image?

    Cheers

Hi, I've been wanting to get a new laptop have have been doing research for quite a while now. My original thought was to get laptop for around 1,000, with a core 2 duo processer(1.83 or above), 14 inch screen or smaller, delicated video card...
Then I ran into A8JP in newegg...and wow

    Anyways, my real questions are:
    1) is the price of the A8JP in newegg ever goin to drop in the future? (I can wait a little but dont want to risk newegg running out of stock)

    2) everything on A8JP is alsmot perfect for me except XP MCE, does Asus provide XP Pro for A8JP (meaning still able to use a feature A8JP has: webcam, hot keys...etc)

    Thanx guys

    - I doubt the price is going to drop any more. I just bought a A8JP in February for $1,298.99 and it's $50 less now.

same but i don't regret it b/c it's a kickass price. Also if you want win xp pro, just buy pro, uninstall win MCE and install pro.

Not to mention that I bought two 1GB sticks of Kingston RAM for $96 each at the time. Now it's about $60 a stick. There's your discount right there. :)

Prices are always going to fluctuate, so my suggestion is to buy things when you think it's the right price.

My question was actually if I do install XP Pro, will all the original features like hotkeys, webcam, bluetooth...etc still work.

I am pretty sure I am gonna buy the machine, just want to figure out these problems before I do, unless anyone has a similar machine with a similar price.

btw, anyone who actually bought the machine from newegg and decided to return or replace due to screen or other problems? what is the condition for returning or replace laptop with newegg? what kind of procedure do I have to go thru?

    thanx again guys

@eternalrecca : Yea they will still work. The drivers for XP are all on the Asus support web. If my memory recalls correctly XP MCE is based off XP pro, meaning that MCE drivers == Pro drivers == Home Drivers.

Yea they'll work, because i'm running XP pro here. In australia its only available with XP pro and as said above the drivers on the asus website work for all XP version.

According to newegg, the laptop is non-refundable, if the screen is cracked or something on delivery you might be able to return it, other than that my, bet would be you'll have to go through asus. BTW, I got mine a few weeks ago from newegg and the screen is gorgeous.

The difference between MC and pro:

1.) In MC 2k5 you can not join a domain. (There is a registry tweak that allows this, however when it is enabled the MC becomes unavailable.)

2.) In pro MC is not available, but you can join domains.

So to sum it up they are exactly the same Operating system just a different name, and with just a minor registry tweak you can switch back and forth. In my opinion, no need to spend the extra bread on XP pro, just google for the registry tweak and you got XP pro functionality. If indeed you plan on joining your box to a domain?!?

Yes, it is 50$ less, but you got the vista upgrade option. Which as far as I can tell is worth, more than 50$, at least according to new egg.

I was a bit saddened to hear that they had stopped giving the vista upgrade with the laptop, after I bought it, figures, but I plan on getting vista ultimate anyway sometime soon, so I'll just have to deal with the no upgrade option. Besides by the time I get it maybe the drivers will have all their bugs worked out... ;)

    Just a note...
The last couple of days, my htpc (IR keyboard) was acting really squirrelly. I realized just last night what was happening...
With my laptop on my lap and me on the couch, the IR port of the laptop was facing the IR receiver for the keyboard. While I was just doing normal things (looking at websites, editing html, etc...) the laptop was sending commands to shut the htpc off, open My Computer, etc...
I disabled the IR port on the laptop and it hasn't happened since.

Wow, that sucks. No I checked mine and it doesn't have any cracking or anything that even indicates it will. It almost looks like you had something in between your screen and keyboard, and when you opened it, it cracked the plastic. Good luck man, post how your negotiations with asus go.

Hi Cervello, thanks for all the help, the reason I asked this was because after reading all the posts here, ppl either love the screen or hate its guts, I am thinking it might be the quality control issue for the screen, so I guess I'll just have to try my luck with Asus and newegg, hopefully I'll get a good screen (and other features as well) and wont have to deal with replacement or return

I wasnt aware that they were giving or stoped giving vista upgrade (business edition??) any chance the offer will come back?? and I still have the dilemma of waiting for the price to drop(how long? how much?) and risk of newegg running out of stock. anyone has any adivce on this? does newegg historically drop their price on NB and how much.

    Thanks again

It was actually vista (home premium). It appears that most major players dell, hp, sony etc. were all offering the same incentive ending on the same day, so I would imagine it was a program by Microsoft to get users switched over to vista. I would further guess if you want vista you'll have to wait until the A8JP comes with it pre-installed. I highly doubt they will start a new program to switch over, as most new machines are coming with Vista pre-installed now.

Its hard to say if the price will drop, if I were a betting man, I'd say the price may raise a bit when it starts coming with vista. I'd guess ~50$. Again this is purely speculative, but seems about right to me.

    Cheers.

Actually I dont want the vista upgrade, at least for now.

I have a friend who is goin back to Taiwan and is going to check the price on A8 series in TW for me, or something with similar spec. (just cancelled my order with newegg!!)

I'll wait until he comes back early May, hopfully A8JP still available in newegg or I get a good deal in TW :) (dont know about how to get service in US with a laptop bought in TW thou)

Has anyone done this to their A8JP , multicore config http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=60416
My drivers utility disk had the KB896256 MS hotfix on it and I installed all of the MS Hotfixes from the ASUS disk but the registry entries werent there or the boot ini text wasnt there so I added them .So I was wondering if it was working even if the registry entries werent there ? Because the benchmarks before and after dont seem much different , I used the everest CPU benchmarks some were slightly higher some slightly lower .

hey guys, so i bought my asus a8jp a week ago. everything was running really slow at first so i took out some applications and removed alot from startup. at first the shutdown and startup was really slow, but now it seems to be working fine. the notebook is now doing pretty good, but i play some online games and the game seems to be lagging alot.

I'm playing lord of the rings online an open beta game right now that has similar graphics to guildwars and wow.

i seem to be experiencing lag even when using direct connection sometimes. what im curious about is that my friend on his sony vaio usign a 1gb ram nvidia go6200 doesnt seem to lag at all and i do.

im running the game in high graphics. the cpu is good, and everything. my friend with the vaio can even use AIM and play the game at the same time w/ lag free, but if i open aim at all there'll be heavy spikes and lag. anyone know how i can fix this???

how do i reboot the entire computer and reinstall everything? if this is necessary for me to make the computer a little faster, then can someone explain how this is done?

Newegg gets small shipments of the A8Jp. They've run out before.

Give it a couple of days and check back. They had them in stock yesterday, so they must have just run out.

I think the A8JP is done for, as Asus discontinued that model and Newegg.com was practically the only place one could find it.

Asus F3JP is a close option though if they are discontinuing the A8JP the F3JP might get nixed to. Next step up is the A8Js though for $1500.

When they run out, do they mark them as 'out of stock,' or does the model completely disappear from their database? Because searching for A8JP finds nothing, and going to the old link pops up an error about the item not being in the database.

It looks like Milestone PC isn't carrying them anymore either.

If they plan on getting anymore in they should still be listed as Out of Stock. Since they are gone from their database my guess would be they are not getting any more in. Glad I already have mine. :)
