So my trusty Sony laptop finally gave up the ghost after years of faithful service, and of course right in the middle of a big photo job. So this morning I had to trot down to the local store and find a replacement, having been out of the market a bit in recent years. I didn't think much of the ultrabooks because (a) weight/portability isnt a big issue for me as sheer power since this will mostly stay at home as the main box with occasional travel forays and (b) most of the ultrabooks seem overpriced for what they are (or more often are not). AND, they all come with Windows 8 now, which my short forays into had left me rather underwhelmed. After getting rather depressed while making the rounds I was suddenly astonished to discover this metal beast coming in at well under a grand, an Asus N76VJ-DH71. Serious aluminum body, latest 3rd Gen i7 3630/8 gigs of RAM/2gb GeForce card or switchable Intel graphics (haha), and a *Bang and Olufson* sound system (?!?) that even comes with a little subwoofer you plug into a special port on the laptop (i am not kidding). But the coolest part, which I didn't even realize till I got home, is that this huge mother has TWO (2x) 1gb hard drives! Two separate bays! So of course I cloned the old 5400 drives they came with on to two new 750gig Momentus XT Hybrid drives, which, combined with the UEFI Network stack boot option in the bios, means that it boots up in mere seconds. Jaw-dropping.

(dfferent model but same setup and boot time)

And I can't believe I'm saying this, but after figuring out how to turn off all the new Metro crap in Win8, it is surprisingly fast, usable, and a worthy successor to Win7. But you gotta turn off a LOT of crap first.
    I like it!

I purchased the Asus N76VJ in dec.2012. It is a great laptop. Stakker, do yourself a favor and do a clean install if Windows 7, it is much faster than Win 8. I have also put 16gb of ram in mine, which also helped.
