UnrarX works like a charm for rar files.

Love 7Zip for Windows and wasn't aware of ports to other operating systems.

    I use Macpar DeLuxe

Its meant for joining split archives and using pars, but it works on single ones, and its a pretty good program.

the built in archive utility is honestly an excellent way to go for basic .zip files, I just leave .rar files to my PC, as there aren't many Mac specific downloads involving .rar

To preview content of an archive file, you can use Quicklook plugin.
If you are familiar with winrar, you can use BetterZip.
If your want to decompress file quickly, use UnrarX for .rar and Archive Ultility (integrated into OSX) for .zip.
