I had some problems with stuffit expander so I have to recommend UnRarX

i second that. unless you specifically have to open .sitx files (which are stuffit only) unrarx is the way to go.

So is UnRarX just for .rar files? Is there a program that works with most compression formats (zip, rar ...etc)?

WinRAR for windows is great. It handles quite a few formats. They have a mac version but it's only a command-line app, so no GUI.

I was thinking of something other than Stuffit Expander. Something better maybe?

Ah yeah. I have something called ArchiveUtility that handles everything else.

The only reason you need Stuffit is for their proprietary format (sitx?).

Otherwise, OS X can do zips and gzips without a problem (any uniz system can). Just need UnRarX for rars.

I use MacPar DeLuxe, its main purpose is for par checking, but it also extracts pretty much most file formats, and also multi part archives. Its what I use most of the time.

So with OSX I would be able to zip files and unzip various types of compressed files (other than rar) with no additional software? I did not know that. Learn something new every day. :)

Don't you have a Mac? Why don't you try double clicking on some archives files? Archive Utility supports most compression formats, it just doesn't support RAR and 7z and a few other less popular types.

From day one I've had Stuffit Expander 12 installed so all I've ever used is that. It's worked well enough but it's just an expander so I was looking for a WinRAR-like application to archive. I just never knew OSX had that built in.

I use The Unarchiver. It's simpler, and it works.

3rd vote for the Unarchiver. Simple and fairly comprehensive
