I just got my MBP and when I plug in my external HD I've been using with my windows pc, it will say that it's removed after a minute or so (even though I haven't done anything to it). I managed to copy a couple files onto my mac before the HD disappears. however, when I unplug it and plug it in again, I can't get my MBP to see the HD. Normally it only sees it for about a minute or so when I boot up my computer... is this normal? I'd like to be able to use the HD as most of my files from work are on it... thanks!

Sounds like your HD is either damaged or it is not receiving enough power. Does your HD still work with other computers? What kind of HD is it?

Some Hard drives, like WD, do have some issue with mac machines.

if it is a 2.5" external drive powered by the USB ports consider using a powered usb hub as I have had problems with machines not putting enough power through the port to operate the drive correctly.

Hmmm I plugged in my external HDD (which i had been previously been using with my windows machine) and it worked seamlessly. The only problem i encountered was that i had to install an external driver for it as it was NTFS formatted.
