I was looking at switching to mac for my computing....however i refuse to pay over 3g for a 17" mbp. why dont they make a "normal" macbook with 17" monitor?

I can buy 2 HP d7t for the price of one 17" mbp. are there rumors of a 17" normal mb? The price of the mac hardware is insane...i dont mind paying for a 24" imac for home...1800 for that is fine...but 3500-3700 for a mbp? they have to get somehting with a big monitor for less coin.

I'm very doubtful that they will introduce a 17" Macbook. Macbooks are their budget model.

I wish Apple would introduce a 15" notebook with MacBook hardware. If you want a larger screen than 13" you're forced to go with the pro.

Yeah, no reason there shouldn't be a 15" model... that's standard. 17" though is usually reserved for performance PCs, and the MB really isn't in that class.

I haven't heard any rumours of any addition to the "consumer" MacBook line, and I agree that it'll make sense to have a 15.4-inch MacBook before having a 17-inch MacBook. Arquis makes a good point, unfortunately, the 17-inch market is small compared to the 13.3-inch and 15.4-inch market, so Apple doesn't need to invest too much in that arena.

The 17" MBP starts at US$2799.

You can always get a refurb. Apple's got a good reputation for selling quality refurbished laptops.

    I got a refurb 2.4Ghz 17", it's very nice.

What? There's a 13.3 inch market? lol. I know there was one like 10 years ago, but Notebook PC's have moved on for the most part.

That's the largest size you'll ever find in a fully rugged laptop, and it is still a common size for people who don't want a large bulky laptop to carry around with them. (Oddly enough, both of those are complete opposites of each other).

My work laptop has an 8.4" screen, if it makes you feel any better.

Not at all, I just don't see the point. Prefer having the screen real estate. Everyone I know runs 15.4 or larger. I'm really shocked people would go with smaller screens. Eye strain and all that. :p

I bought an XPS M1330 for traveling. It only weighs 4.4 pounds, has long battery life, was cheap and if I wouldn't be bent out of shape if it got lost or stolen. Airplane seats can be pretty small and sometimes a smaller laptop is much better than a larger laptop.

My office setup is my 17 inch MBP driving five monitors. My home setup is a desktop driving 24 and 17 inch monitors hooked up to my 17 inch MBP.

I think in general 13.3-inch is still the biggest seller :p. I don't find the screen too small, most of the time the smaller screen size makes for a lighter notebook and smaller dimensions. If I need a big screen I'll connect it to an external display :p.

The US is pretty car-centric which means that it's no big deal to carry around a large and heavy laptop. If you spend most of your time walking to get to work or school, then weight and size become more important.

ok, finished reading this stuff...2799 is the starting point. I got my new acer 17" 2.0 core 2 duo, 3 gigs ram, 320 gig HD, awsome monitor, for 999.99. Secondly, I use my notebook as a desktop at work...so the 17" monitor makes perfect sense for me. I ditched the idea of the mac. I picked up my acer aspire 7720 vista home premium on it etc. I am very happy. if mac had a 17" mb at these specs for around 1500 I would be in for sure. however at well over 3g for the same specs, I cannot see me spending the money on it. Same with desktop too...

Well First off 17" would be overkill for the macbook's hardware, and if I ever saw a 17" macbook lol I would laugh so hard. I mean come on wouldn't it look so funny?!?!

A 15.4 inch would be good, i personally prefer the 13.3 for a laptop anyways. I mean, given the hardware, why would you need anything that big? I can understand for photo editing and GFX, bar that i cant see a purpose.

You cant game on the macbook (well not seriously). I don't know why people game on laptops anyways, but to each their own.

I doubt the monitor on the acer is better than a macbook pro's. But i may be wrong. I like the macbook screen, its 1280x800, my previous cheap toshiba was a 15.4 1280x800, so i didn't lose any real estate. My gaming computer has a 24" monitor so that is enough for me now. And if i need to i just hook up my 24" monitor to my macbook.

My eyes would cross if I had a screen that small considering how long I stare at my computer screens, I could never do it. Then again, maybe I'm just getting old. :p

Kojack; You are now the one millionth person to say that this month. Check out the actual specs, and read some past forum posts.

Perhaps you really need a good desktop then? Personally I only use my laptops when I need to... While working, or when I have no access to my desktop.

My work laptop needs to be rugged (I literally throw it around in cars to get stuff done faster), but if it had a full sized 13" screen, it would weigh a ton, and walking around car lots with a 10lb+ laptop with a few other bits of equipment for 8 hours a day... it doesn't sound like fun. (My CF-28 weighs about 16lbs right now).

But for me, the 13" screen is good enough for what I'm doing with it and where I'm doing it. I'm not watching videos on it, I don't play games, I use it to tune my car's fuel injection and to get maps. Obviously 13" is large enough for maps, or we wouldn't be seeing 3" screens on Garmin units.

I think the biggest thing is, most people who use a laptop are using it to do some work where they can't take their desktop (or don't want to lug it there), so a smaller book doesn't mean worse.

The iPod touch is doing great in sales as is the iPhone. I bought an iPod Touch for just internet access and watching movies and it's the ultimate in portable - fits in a shirt pocket.

Yes, I love my iPod Touch too, but in a way, its made me want an iPhone even more, in the sense that I love the web browsing and email and stuff, and it feels limiting that I can only really use those features most of the time where I already have access to a notebook: at home. If I had an iPhone 3G, I could be surfing the net on the way to school, everywhere! That would be fun.
