i recently went to the apple store. i was looking at the white basic macbook. it was pretty dirty and looked pretty cheap. the top layer of white plastic looked very poor quality. how strong are they? from what i saw, not so much? im just asking because i was thinking of getting for my mother for mothers day. i just dont want it to get dirty easy, and look old. also dent easy.

It doesn't get dirty easily...its the fact that its in the Apple Store, where people can just walk in and touch it...some have just played in the dirt, some just ate pizza...etc. etc.

I owned a MB for eight months, LL. Never had a problem keeping it clean - the screen excepted - it did get dusty. Never had problems with dents, though a repairman scratched its lid once, but Apple corrected that situation immediately.

If the machine appeals to you for your mom, go for it without worry. It's built well, and Apple backs their machines with great service. Good luck.

I have white MB and it doesn't get dirty, but it scratchs easily, but the scratches are not very visibly, can be see only when examined closely.

I have had a white macbook since the Penryn's came out earlier this year. I carry it around a lot more than I used to carry my old Dell and it has no scratches or dirt that I've noticed. I should mention that I care more about what's on the screen than what the case looks like but I think I'd notice any large scratches or dirt. Not a problem for me at all.

    That made me laugh.

but no, from my experience with the white Macbook, the plastic isn't poor quality or cheap - sure it isn't perfectly resistant to scratches, but barely any laptops are, if any. It definitely doesn't get to look 'old' or dirty, and as a plus side, it is an Apple design, so it will look contemporary for a while. :)

I have to chime in on this point. I just bought a new Black MacBook and my initial thought was that it's built like a tank!

I've used mainly Dell laptops up until now (and will be selling my m1330) and none of them feel as sturdy as my MB.

I too saw a very dirty white MB at the store which turned me off from buying it.
