Based on your requirements, I think you should get the Air.

honestly, whatever is on sale in the refurb center, for your needs basically anything from a netbook up will suffice. if you want to store alot of data or video/music then the Pro is a better option since you can actually put in a large hard drive

Well I do have external drive for extra storage and backup but want a SSD or will upgrade to one if I bought a pro since it doesnt have one. What are my pros and cons between a air and a pro? I know the air doesn't have a optical cd drive which is making it tough for me to decide and what I should buy along with few other things.

SSD is not much of an issue in either but options are more limited in the Air. the Pro can use most any 2.5" SSD in place of the hard drive and if you sacrifice the DVD drive you can also use another HDD or SSD in tandem.

basically the Pros and cons are:

Air. limited storage options and next to no upgradability
    better screen
thinner and lighter but can be negated if you need external storage and adaptors

Pro: Upgradable on the RAM and HDD
Has an optical drive. ( pro to some negative to others )
    bit thicker and heavier
bit better battery life on average
full volt CPU gives a bit of a boost on number crunching and encoding.

Yeah think the macbook pro would be better cause I do want to be able to upgrade and I think be better off with the pro vs the air. Plus a pro probably be alittle cheaper of I keep watching around.

The Air's SSD is upgradable. Only the RAM is not. As for when you should buy, if you want or need it now, get it now. There will always be something better around the corner so if you take that mentality, you will be perpetually waiting.

If you have a Best Buy, Apple retail store, or any Apple authorized retailers (Fry's, Micro Center, et al) near you, I would suggest paying them a visit and trying the machines yourself. Check the screens (glare, resolution), keyboards, and sizes/weights in person, then decide which one you like more. You'll have to consider if the ability to upgrade takes precedence over screen resolution and weight. Keep in mind the extra expense of adding your own SSD to the standard MacBook Pro since this feature is already included with the Air.

The 2011 model uses Intel's older Sandy Bridge CPU with built-in HD 3000 graphics while the 2012 uses the newer Ivy Bridge with HD 4000 graphics. The 2012 model is slightly faster in CPU-intensive applications and much, much faster in GPU-intensive ones. If you want to play games, the 2012 is by far the better choice. Even still, I would probably get the 2012 anyway because you'll have a warranty that you can extend with AppleCare.

Also, in case you weren't aware, refurbs ordered from Apple carry the same warranty as new and are eligible for an extension with AppleCare any time within the first year.

I always try to buy my laptops from my local MicroCenter but that's just me. They'll match most competitors including new egg and apple education as well.

Interesting, didn't know that. The MBP I'm rolling right now came from Micro Center. They put these models on clearance when Apple announced the 2012 lineup last summer. It would have cost $2649 + tax from Apple. I paid $1599 then upgraded the RAM and hard drive myself. The stock config was a 750 GB HDD and 4 GB RAM.

Oh I need to say that they match in Ohio, but They DO NOT match in California for whatever reason. I spend time in both places because my parents and I grew up in Ohio but work in California.
