    can i just pop in the os cd and install a fresh windows without mac osx?

    Not yet. You have to wait for Vista SP1 Ultimate x64. That version will support EFI and will be able to install from DVD

    As long as your firmware is up-to-date, you shouldn't have any problems as Boot Camp itself is just a toolset to make partitioning and packaging drivers easier to do from within OS X. Actually booting from a CD/DVD or OS install (Windows in this case) is handled by a BIOS emulation layer that's a part of EFI (what Apple uses instead of BIOS).

    So to answer your question simply, yes. :D

    I think the OP meant can they just install Windows and forget about OSX. Answer = Nope.
