I bought a used jailbroken 2G iphone for my wife. When I put my SIM card in it tells me to connect to itunes. Will I lose all of the apps and games already installed? Do I need to restore it and start over? I'm completely ignorant on this as I have never even owned an ipod. I appreciate any help.

I believe you do the activation thru iTunes; if it sees that its jailbroken, it might lock it down. I could be mistaken though **this is what I've heard in passing**

Nope it won't. It will corrupt your firmware which is very unpleasant. Restore your firmware with Itunes, and then jailbreak openssh/ whatever and use your simcard for this process

Yeah you need to restore it first, don't activate it though. Jailbrake it instead (if that's what you want to do).

If i were you, i would run as fast as you can to google and find a forum dedicated to the iphone. The advice here up to this point is not very good.

yes you will lose all those games and apps since they were downloaded through an account that isn't yours (unless they were obtained through cydia/installer in which case you just redownload them). you must restore, jailbreak, and unlock. how you ask? google is your friend.

Since the apps (from the AppStore) were downloaded and installed from another Apple ID account, you won't be able to download and install more without using the same account. So if you like any of the apps, you can note their names down. Plug your iPhone by USB to your computer and make sure you are using iTunes 8. Click to restore your iPhone and it will automatically restore and activate. You will lose all the apps, and it will not be jailbroken anymore, but you can create your own Apple ID and use it to redownload those apps you liked that you noted down. For jailbreaking, unfortunately Apple released the new 2.2.1 software update today so for now you will not be able to jailbreak it but very soon there will be a revised solution to do so.
