    hello all

looking for something light and compact, preferably 12" but will consider 14"

basically need something extremely portable with a full keyboard and relatively good battery (more than 3.5 hours) consumption.

the notebook will mostly be used for word processing but there will be some manipulation of photos and probably some digital video. i don't have to have DV inputs but it would be nice.
photoshop and manipulation of PDF docs will be another common activity.

i can live with 512MB and 40GB, though i'd like a little more HD space. docking is fine, and i don't even mind not having the optical drive on the main unit itself.

i'm looking at a 14" T43 but i'm also considering a 12" apple powerbook. i'm afraid of the apple's rigidity, lack of software/freeware, and not really too happy with prior apple experiences (mostly because the units got old fast, were more expensive to begin with, and were too much trouble to upgrade). i can get both units at more or less the same price. where the apple edges out the IBM is in the inclusion of the DVDR and the firewire. basically i'm pretty much a PC guy with the common phobias related to swtiching to apple, am i being too paranoid?

You can get an external drive for the ThinkPad. It is cheaper and better drives.
