I just noticed in iStat that my 2 week old uMBP 15 is only running the left fan. Temps seem fine, but I'm just curious is this is the norm or do I have a faulty right fan?

No it`s not both fans should be running, have you checked the fan outlet on the back to see if air is coming out of only one fan and it`s not just a dodgy sensor.

EDIT : As it is new , get it replaced

Can it be that the iStat is reporting something wrong rather than this being a "fault"? Can you confirm "physically" that the fan is just not working?

put your ear or hand beside the fan and check if you can hear or feel it blowing.

Luckily iStat is reporting fan speeds for both fans on my MBP 15.

Well, I took it to the genius bar and they needed the computer for 24hrs to run a diagnostic test, but I needed the computer tonight so I declined.

Is this an accurate layout of the current mbp internals?

    http://www.eeshops.com/images/Appple-unibody-MacBook-Pro-15_1.jpg

If so, all I hear/feel is the middle, or "right" fan according to the picture/ I only feel/hear air flow from the physical center of the back of the laptop. Now, I don't know if the fan on the side feeds into the middle before exhausting out or not.

If anyone has a uMBP 15, can you please check if you can hear/feel both fans independently?

Edit - Fan Control shows that my right fan is @ -1 RPM, so this can't be a problem with iStat. This narrows it down to either the sensor or the fan, and I'm leaning towards the fan based on the physical exam.

I think I'll make another trip to the genius bar tomorrow and just try to reason with the geniuses based on the physical facts.

Long message, sorry! Thanks for the help in advance!

Just for future reference guys, the uMBP 15 with the 9400 only just has one single fan. I had all this information pulled up during my argument with the Genius, so he finally took the back off and showed me. lol....

One of the fans on my uMBP died a couple months after purchase. I took it to the genius bar, they ordered whatever parts were needed (took 10 minutes), and said theyd call me in a couple days to let me know when the parts came in. Got a call 2 days later, went in, dropped it off. They said it would take an hour. walked around the mall for 30 minutes, went back and it was done. painless.

less things to fail... less money spent... less battery used...

its basically a Macbook Pro 13" stuck in a larger case with a bigger heatsink, why would it need an extra fan?
