ultimately, im trying to get a connection to the internet on my desktop computer running ubuntu 8.04 so that i can download ndiswrapper or possibly just a different driver for my wireless pci card.

my best bet i think, temporarily, is to share the internet connection of my macbook pro. i went to preferences, and clicked on internet sharing, selected to share my wifi connection via ethernet, and started it up (checked the box).

at this point, i would expect to be able to connect to the internet via my ubuntu desktop. it didn't work and i want to know if its a problem on the mac or on the desktop

    thanks.

You may want to try asking about this in the Wireless and Networking forums. Might have better luck there.

does the desktop need to have a direct connection to the MBP when set up that way?

why don't you just download what you need on another system?

With Ubuntu, it is easier to install things directly to it because the installer it uses is able to look up legit and latest versions of what he needs without having to manually find it.

yes, just like most operating systems.

is it not possible to just download the installer on another machine, move it to the Ubuntu machine, and let it do its thing?
