I'm trying to transfer files from my PC to my new macbook. Here's part of the instruction:

    2. in finder select go/connect to/server...in the dialog that appears type in
    smb://DNSname/ShareName or
    smb://IPaddress/ShareName or

I tried doing just that but it didn't work. Of course I'm assuming I have to put something else for IPadress and Sharename (I just copy-pasted 'smb:/DNSname/ShareName'). What do I put?

I'll assume that your machines are connected to each other either directly or to the same network here.

    1) Go to System Preferences.
    2) Go to the Sharing pane.
    3) Enable Windows sharing.
    4) Write down the address you see in that window after you enable it (it's under the part with the tickboxes), it should look something like \\10.0.0.2\Yourusername
    5) Go to your Windows machine.
    6) Right-click My Computer and choose "Map Network Drive".
    7) Enter the address you wrote down in step 4.
    8) Enter your username/password (for the OS X account).

And that should be it. You can now move stuff around between the two.
Doing it from the other side is also possible but this is easier for me at least, because I don't know how to set up sharing in Windows.
