Try resetting PRAM (shut down the computer entirely, press power, hold down Apple-Alt-P-R until it reboots again), but it could be a faulty drive.

What computer is this on, specifically? Powerbook/iBook/Macbook/Macbook Pro? 12, 14, 15, 17"? When did you buy it?

If it is in warranty and resetting PRAM (or actually that combination resets NVRAM on the Intel macs, so even better) doesn't work, I'd take it to an AASP or Apple Store.

Someone explain to me more about the PRAM, and what it stands for and does.

In all my years on PC, I never heard of a PRAM.

Make sure you aren't pressing the eject key when you insert the cd, I can see that happen too with some people.

    This should answer your questions:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=86194
    Oh, and http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=2238 also.

It's not a complete list I guess, but basically PRAM and NVRAM are various settings that are saved in the hardware. The same maneuver that resets PRAM on PPC-based Macs resets both PRAM and NVRAM on Intel-based Macs (and, on a PPC Mac, resetting NVRAM also resets the PRAM in the process).

Basically, resetting these and the PMU/SMC is what you can do to possibly resolve some hardware issues without going to an AASP/Apple Store.

Thanks I appreciate the help Starlight.

It's definitely something I will look into when I have more time, and add it to the Mac user guide that is stickied here, as well as the PDF version that is currently undergoing right now. thanks.
