I want to do a clean-install of Leopard, but first, backup (on my external Seagate Freeagent Pro). Should I clone on a read-only disk image or a read and write "sparse" disk image? Do I even need to clone? Or should I just copy-paste my documents, pics, music, and what not?

I copy pasted all my stuff to my external when I reinstalled. Be sure to back up everything though, stuff like your bookmarks and program preferences can make a big difference in getting back into the stride of the new system.

If you want to backup your important files onto an external, use Time Machine.

errr, I'm still on Tiger. Tiger backup first, then moving on to Leopard.
