    Hi,

I would like to ask this question to people with some laptop-experience:

    1) is the macbook pro exceptional small and light if you compare the MBP with other 15,4 inch laptops?

    OR

    2) is the MB just heavy and large if you compare it with other 13,3 inch laptops?

I'm asking this because I don't know to buy which one. Normally, I would just buy the MB, but it seems that the MBP is just a little bit larger and a little bit heavier and it's even thinner then the MB! But I would like the MB because of it portability. I want to carry it without many problems. I hired a toshiba notebook before, 15 inch screen, and it was 4kg, which was pretty heavy.

But these days I'm thinking: since the MBP is thinner and slightly a bit larger, why not getting the MBP? The difference between the specs of the MB and MBP are much bigger then it's appearence...

Well, the actual size difference isn't that great between the MB and MBP. I think there is too much of a bevel around the screen on the MB myself.
After playing with both of them and other notebooks, I can say the MBP feels much lighter than other 15.4 notebooks in it's class.
I think the MB is a bit heavy for a 13.3 notebook. It's only .4 lbs lighter than the MBP.
The MBP weighs in at 5.6 lbs (2.5 kg) and the MB at 5.2 lbs(2.3kg).
The main reason for going with the MB is due to cost and battery life. At least, that is the reason most people I know who got a MB over MBP.

my main concern at the moment is the size. I really need a laptop as portable as possible. But I've got a weird feeling that I can have a much better notebook for some a few more lbs and inches...

Well, if size is the most important thing... and you don't really want to us OS X, then i'd maybe look at some other 12-13.3" notebooks. I'm not sure how much the competitors go for... but you can find some that are lighter and have better battery life than the MB.
However, I think that the MBP is great, just a tad expensive. I mean, it really is lighter and less clunky than any other 15" notebook I've ever used or seen.

Isn't the MB 1.08" while the MBP is 1" thickwise? And Like Hollow nail said, if your Main concern is the size, and not the OS or getting an Apple, I am sure you can find a lighter notebook in your price range. I would go with the 2.0GHz 15.4" MBP, it is really small for it's screen size, and you will appreciate the dedicated graphics and the extra screen real estate. The MBP also looks really nice, and I am sure if you ever wanted to sell it you will be able to get probably a lot of your money back, in the future. You should go to a Macmall, because the one in Torrance, CA had some Sony laptops that ranged in sizes, like 15.4" - 17" etc.. and they had the MB and MBP, the MBP was really small for it's size, but also the MB and MBP aren't super light, but they aren't that heavy. It get's heavy when you carry the AC adapter and stuff. Best of luck on your decision.

The size difference isn't really a problem, I find my MacBook Pro highly portable compared to the Fujitsu/Siemens, Dells etc. I see other people have at the university. :D

    the average weight for a:
    15.4" PC = 6.2-6.4lbs.
    14" PC = 5.3-5.4lbs
    13.3" PC = 3.2 - 4.6lbs.

the large variation in the 13.3" category is due to many configurations involving a 3 cell battery or no dvd-rom vs 6/9cell batteries with a dvd-rom.

the mbp is the lightest consumer notebook to my knowledge. the macbook is the heaviest 6cell 13.3", to my knowledge.
cost aside, i would go with the MBO anyday, otherwise consider the PC market.
here are a few you might want to look into:
    sony sz, tx
    toshiba u200
    lenovov v100
    dell m1210
    asus w5, w3, w7
    acer c3012
    panasonic w4

    argh, it's so difficult :)
although my biggest concern is portability so I should just go for the macbook (since gaming is not a concern for me), I feel like the MBP isn't that much bigger and heavier... I'm just afraid that the MBP is a that little bit too large to use on a plane or train etc... Is it easy to use the macbook pro on your lap?

Just for a small sacrifice of portability I can gain much more performance... Can someone tell me how the batterly life compares between MB and MBP?

Really you can't go wrong with whatever one you choose, they are both excellent in terms of portability in my opinion, when I talk portability I talk in terms of that they are thinner than most notebooks. The MBP in my opinion just had things I didnt feel like I needed, granted I do wish the MB had a Dual-link DVI, but I can live without it.

If your looking for the smallest size to get, than obvisually the MB would be the logical choice, but if thinnest is than the MBP, however the MB is pretty thin to begin with anyways as it still beats out many others in its price range.
