I just want to make sure I'm not missing any key differences between the two models here:

    • force touch track pad
    • broadwell CPU + graphics
    • sligthly bigger battery

I'm leaving Canada for Switzerland (for 6 months) in 2 weeks and I need to get a new laptop ASAP as my old one is dead, but haven't been bothered by it to much because I have a nice desktop with multi-monitor...

Unfortunately money is tight right now. So I'm considering the mid-2014 model instead of the newer 2015 to save a few hundred bucks. I just want to make sure I'm not loosing anything. I'll use it for viewing 1080p videos, doing some video editing sometimes, but nothing major, browsing chrome with ~10 tabs open.

I could wait and buy the Macbook Pro in Switzerland but
    Canada rMBP 13" - 2015: 1550$ CAD
    Swiss rMBP 13" - 2015: 1399 CHF (1812$ CAD)

    huge price difference.

Last thing, I've seen a few rMBP going off Craigslist and Kijiji, brand new, sealed, with receipt. Should I stay away from these?

    Thank you!

You get flash drives with twice the read/write speeds with the 2015 model.

I generally prefer to buy off the Apple Store.

I could investigate Craigslist ads but that takes time and effort too and most of the Apple Ads are in a major metro an hour away from me so I have to factor in driving time and parking to look at them. Whether or not you choose to try that route depends on how much effort you want to make in the purchase. Given your current time crunch, just ordering online or buying from a local Apple Store might be less of a hassle.

Read/Write speed wouldn't make much of a difference for my usage.

I just got my limit boosted on my credit card, so I was about to buy the mid 2014 rMBP 256gb, the refurbished model from the apple store, boom. The model I want they don't have any more... Frustrated!

A friend of mine works at the apple store so I can get 15% off the 2015 model. So basically I can get the 2015 for 100$ cheaper than the 2014.

    MBP 2014 = 1400$ /1602$ with taxes
    MPB 2015 = 1550$/1507$ with taxes & rebate

Makes it for an easy choice.

ehhh that GPU is like 3 years old, the R9 M370X. I don't know what apple is doing releasing the same CPU and Older GPU and giving a touchpad upgrade and charing a premium price tag. Nothing PRO about this iteration... Considering what type of technology we currently have out. I'm baffled on what I'm paying for on the 2500 price tag...

Probably waiting for Intel to get their act together on mobile QC.

The R9 M370X is ridiculously underpowered for how expensive the 2015 rMBP is. For starters, my laptop's GTX 860M is about 10-15% more powerful and costs half as much. I dunno what Apple's playing at. But then Macs have always been overpriced.

I feel that the only Macs worth their cost are the Mac Pro and 13" cMBP (are they still selling it?).

    Why not hackintosh? ;)

Value is in the eyes of the beholder and I think that cost isn't that much of a factor to most people buying these things.

I went with integrated graphics as I use mine mainly for real work.

Do you mean to say discrete graphics cards are meant for gamers only?

My renders are some 10x faster when accelerated by the dGPU.

I'd guess that most people get graphics cards for gaming.

I use mine mostly SSHd into Linux development servers for coding.

Just got back from Nordstroms as I bought some clothes for myself and visited the Apple Store which was next door. I gotta admit that I do NOT like the new touchpad. Maybe I don't fully understand force touch but I simply do not like the fact that the touchpad does not go down nearly as much as it use to.

I believe users who enjoyed and used tap click as compared to physically pushing down the touchpad as I do, would enjoy the new touchpad. And sadly I gotta admit that I believe I might be using my last macbook as I venture off to a new brand on my next upgrade, I'm not certain yet but I am looking elsewhere now officially.

Can I ask you what you're attempting that your Apple computer isn't able to accomplish?

I use tap a lot but I finally tried out the force touch and it actually felt like it was actually moving even though it wasn't on the click. I normally use an external mouse and only use the trackpad if I'm on a desk with no space for an external mouse.

Every 18 Months, my company provides a stipend of 2 grand towards any laptop of my choice. So if I don't buy a system then it just goes to waste.... Or goes unused, might as well use it on something.

My company will provide me with a system as well but Apple is not on the menu. So I don't have a corporate system; I just use my own.

If you don't use your company's money for a system, then it might just be returned to the shareholders. Maybe you're one of them.
