To cut to the point: how the hell are people putting up with blurry applications on the rMBP? I can't even run Microsoft Office applications for 15 minutes without getting eye strain, nevermind doing anything on Windows through bootcamp.

Is it possible somehow run the display in 1440x900 mode using pixel doubling? If not, I am probably going to have to return this computer.

I don't care for any of the options Apple gives in System Preferences->Display ... your right, they suck.

Like already mentioned, there are 3rd party programs that let you use resolutions you want to use. I run a full unscaled 2880x1800 and everything looks nice. Some thing are a bit small, but its rarely a problem for me since I'm already used to screen zooming a lot. But most things you can up font sizes and such and its not a problem anyways.

It's interesting that some people look at apps like Word or Photoshop and unacceptable issues. While others (I'm in this group) don't see an issue at all. I guess it depends on what you are used to seeing on your last computer, what resolution, etc. I've moved from 1600x900 to the Retina running 1920x1200 and the fuzzy text hasn't been an issue. If I had read reviews and such, I'd have no idea there could be a problem.

The attached screen capture shows the same text, at more or less the same size, in both Word and Textedit. If I zoom in to the image (which is double sized as all rMBP screen captures are), I can see a difference. But when looking at the text "live" on my screen, my eyes see no difference. Perhaps that's a sign that my reading glasses aren't strong enough -- I can''t say.
