I am new to mac and I just have some general questions before I purchase a macbook.

    Are they durable?
Many people in the forum say that macs are overpriced in general. Does this apply to macbook as well? are there anyother resellers that sell it cheaper(maybe a coupon?)

Any new macbook/pro lineup coming out soon with the introduction of Montevina and AMD Puma(not sure about AMD?). I would probably wait before buying one..then

    Thanks

Well I can tell you the AMD won't have any effect on macs. They only use Intels. We really don't know for sure when anything new will be released, but maybe sometime this month or next. Resellers aren't gonna be that much cheaper, but check out the refurb section on Apple's site.

All Apples are generally overpriced for the hardware you get. Whether the computing experience is different is another matter.

Wrt durability, look up NBR's review for the MacBook.

In addition, Macs do not use AMD CPUs.

What people overlook is the overall VALUE you get when buy a Mac. If you're just thinking about hardware, well of course it is overpriced. But, people forget that Macs come with iLife, which includes a whole suite of applications that is very useful to many people. I think the software bundled with the Mac hardware makes it worth the price tag for sure.

In addition to checking the Refurbished Section of the Apple store, if you are a student you can get a student discount (usually like 100-200 dollars).

Apple laptops are not overpriced. You just pay more for better screen, build quality, magsafe adaptor, iLife package, Time Machine, ability to have two systems on computer and use MacOS X (for me this one is the winner). I know that Macs also have hardware and software issues but while I am working on my MBP my colleagues on Dell and Lenovo needs to do paperwork while their laptops are cleaned from viruses or fixed to work properly.

Apple uses usually the latest technology in their laptops. Dell, for example, often buys very cheap parts, even with technical issues and writes patches for Windows to make them work.

Apple laptops are more expensive but they are not overpriced. By paying more you also support a company that care about your experience instead of the revenues of Intel, Dell and some other OEM companies.

Try to get a decent HP laptop and you will find that prices are very similar to Apple.

The goal of any business is to make money. If a company is not making money, they try to figure out a way to do it. Apple seems to ascribe to the "you've got to spend a little to make a little" school, and that's just fine. Their stuff does cost more, but they generally do a better job of standing behind their product. It's foolish to think for one second that consumer sentiment takes precedence over the bottom line.

saturnotaku, you are right that it is foolish to think that consumer sentiment takes precedence over the bottom line. Apple is a company not a charity and it is always about profit. But my point is how you earn your money. You have two ways - you can flood the market with OEM systems and don't care much about quality or you can win by providing the product that people like using and tell their friends how good it is. Apple makes money by winning users souls and they are fanatic about details. I like it as a consumer, to be honest...

I complete agree with antdod, I don't find my macbook to be overpriced or expensive. As aforementioned, as far as hardware goes, macs do tend to cost more money, but when u factor in the OS X and the iLife stuff it just justifies it all. I love my macbook and I'm glad I didn't end up getting an Asus and the quality on these products is remarkable and noteworthy so just get a mac and start a "A new <insert mac name here> Owner!!!" thread like everyone else that made the switch
