is there a way to turn off that DINGG sound at the startup of my computer
even if the sound is muted b4 restart and if headphones are plugged in the sound still comes out of the speaker

and its pretty loud when roommates/girlfriend / anyone else is sleeping and i feel bad. i just want that ding to go away lol

EDIT: i didnt want to make another topic so ill just ask another question in here.
from the apple store, are any of the touch pad protector/keyboard cover things worth it to buy? id like to keep my mbp as nice as possible, do these things work?

You can just cover the speaker with your hands or something, it works too.

I'm curious, shouldn't the speaker be disabled when you plug in a headphone?

thats what i figured but the sound at startup sill comes out of the built in speakers

then once everything starts up the sound comes out of headphones like it should
its only that one loud DING at startup that does it

    1. Psst! and StartupSound.prefpane are two of the more popular ones to get rid of the chime. One's an app, and one's a prefpane as you can see, but both do more or less the same thing.
Strangely enough, my startup chime somehow got muted without me installing anything (but my sound still works!). Even resetting PRAM won't fix it, but I figure I like it that way.

    2. If you're referring to cloth keyboard/screen protectors, they're just microfibre cloths that you put between the keyboard and the screen to prevent the screen from getting scratched or cracked when you close the lid.

I don't know about you guys...but when I drop my volume to None (not Mute, don't get confused), my MacBook doesn't make the startup sound. I find pressing Mute before shutting down doesn't work, but lowering the volume to None works for me.

And of course, you can try the other methods mentioned by other members here.
