I'm thinking of purchasing a new macbook with the mini display port and upon research I have gotten reall confused about cables that go into it.

The one I am looking at is the cheaper mini display to dvi-d, from what I have gathered it does not support a res higher than 1920x1200 and will not support a dvi to vga port, but what I am really worried about is will it support a dual monitor set up (one screen the laptop screen and a standard other screen that does not have a higher resolution.

So will I be fine with that port of do I have to buy the really expensive one to do so all these reviews have me really confused.

Thank you for the quick reply, the reviews that had me confused were the reviews for that part you linked. What had me confused was when they mentioned dual link, I had thought it was dual monitor lol.
