Do you have your firewall on ? (Security settings)

When network stuff quits working, I always look at the firewall first. Are you saying ichat can't log in to yahoo? That's surprising. It seems to speak many IM languages just fine.

Alright, if you want to find out whether its an OS issue, program issue, network issue or router issue can you try this.

    1) Download Little snitch from http://www.obdev.at/products/littlesnitch/index.html. I know you said you have no firewall enabled but with Little Snitch you wil be asked to allow or deny (you should allow obviously) the connections to Yahoo and other services. This will show if your client is actually making the correct outbound request and will also show you what port that request is being made on (make a note of it for later troubleshooting please)

    2) What router do you have (make and model number + firmware revision shown on the router page) and is it shared by anyone else who may have ports reconfigured and conflicting through on onboard firewall. Also do you use torrents and/or P2P software, if so which ones.

    3) Can you connect to your Yahoo account with another laptop/desktop running OSX or Windows using the same broadband provider (if so its not a provider issue). Can you also state if your using a WWAN mobile card to access or standard DSL/cable/dial-up connection over wifi/ethernet.

To be honest saying Adium isn't working either isn't really giving us much to go on to help you. Did Adium not work as in it didn't connect to your Yahoo account or do you mean it didn't connect to any type of client (MSN, Jabber). If you haven't tried Adium with another messenger client please try it. I have Adium running with multiple Yahoo, MSN, Skype, Facebook, GTalk and Mobileme accounts with no issues, and believe me I have firewalls and connection to torrents etc running in every direction across 5 systems. Port configuration and firewalls can be your friend or foe with every client.

@thair71, as above please provide information on router, connection type, provider etc. Thanks.

I have no problems using Yahoo Messenger 3.0 Beta for chat and voice/video calls on my Macbook. Adium, Skype and MSN Messenger all work normally as well. I haven't had to open any ports in Tiger or on my modem or router. As noted above, see if Little Snitch reveals anything. You could also try contacting your ISP about this. I also recommend doing an internet search about the issue for your modem or router in case there are any known issues. Lastly, if you have access to another OS (e.g., Windows or Linux/Ubuntu via Bootcamp or Parallels/VMWare), then you could try out a messenger client through one of those to determine whether it's an OS X issue.

    @ thair71:
Tried a complete uninstall of the messenger and re-install with a fresh copy from yahoo site? Tried using skype to test out the connection and voice and video?

    cheers ...
