Please bare with me, I have very limited MAC knowledge! I work at a firm that uses PC's and we took over a small office that used to use MAC...

I'm trying to get into the machine so I can backup some of her data...basically this computer boots up, and as soon as the bootup finishes, it falls into a loop.

It cycles about 3 different background pictures, almost like a screensaver, and will not let you click on anything. Every 5 seconds or so, the menu/shortcut list on the left side appears, but will not let you click any buttons, then that will disappear too. You also cannot see any of your icons.

Anyone had experience with this before?

I've tried hitting 'shift' to enter safe boot...but now it asks me for a password...
and the user said she's never had to use a password before. So I'm guessing this is some kind of administrative password which their former I/T staff might have put on the computer and never told them about...
