I convinced my dad to buy an $1800 MBP. It's a nice enough machine, just not really at all up to the hype. Already have had issues with it, and at the end of the day, it's still a computer and takes its pants off just the same as Windows. That said, my dad is still getting used to OS X.
I still like my G73 more, even though the MBP's portability is nice.

I am going to buy a MBP to experience OSX and get a feel of it... there is no doubt the OSX world is growing and having knowledge will be valuable.

If you're a Unix developer (and there are lots of them out there), you appreciate that it's a Unix system and comes with all of the nice tools that you are used to and you don't have to deal with the different ways that Windows works.

For many users, the vast difference in the quantity of malware between Mac OS X and Windows is a big benefit.

OS X has its drawbacks as well like it wasn't saving divx files like it does in windows, though I was finally able to fix it by moving the folder to the desktop. I think Win 7 can give a run for the money to OS X.

Windows 7 has sold 350 million copies since it came out. It is incredibly popular and much, much better than Vista and better than XP. Microsoft is pushing XP off a cliff soon - should be interesting to see what users do without update support on XP.

Umm Microsoft will support XP until 2020, so I don't know where you get the throw off the cliff impression from. Now it is another issue that programs are running ahead of the curve on XP (IE 9 can't run on it) but at least for now one does have alternatives like firefox for IE.

Biggest benefit of Mac Os is that its idiot proof — means you can do whatever you are doing (whatever you want) without having to worry about anything. Mac OS never closed photoshop when i was working with it because of some "critical error", that alone saved me enough money to buy it. I didnt reinstall it in like 4 years which also saved me quite some time (money).

Windows 7 is a huge step forward compared to XP (and towards mac os so to say), but its still not there for me.

OS X has met its match in my father.

It's far from being perfect and, contrary to popular belief, it can be beat quite easily.

    See prior father reference above.

2014 is when Microsoft is going to stop supporting Windows XP. I believe they were going to cut support sooner but businesses and many people got their underoos in a bunch over that. I can't say that I blame them as businesses (and other agencies) don't like to change. I am using a rather old computer hooked up to a UV spec that is still running Windows 98 SE. They didn't upgrade it because Win 98 "just worked" for them.

Statements just like that were made back during the whole Win 98 vs Mac era, when the iPod became popular, when the iPhone was released, and with the iPad. Most of Apple's releases have proven that they are more than just fads.

Well I meant that fad thing for me, not necessarily for the whole world out there.

I don't see anything below XP with instruments I work other than linux / unix which is a different ball game all together. I think it was Win 98 that had that mystery screensaver that I still remember and would love to use again today :D

Last I read, they were ending support in 2014. Do you have new information?

As someone with a mid-2010 15" macbook pro, and who just purchased (and is in the process of returning) an XPS 15 L502X...it isn't so much about being a choice between OS X or Windows. With a Mac, I don't have to choose. I can legitimately run both. It is what it is, and as someone that learned to use a PC while tinkering with Linux, OS X is a breath of fresh air. I also really like Windows 7. However, that being said...

There is a HUGE disparity between the quality of, for example, a Dell XPS and a Macbook Pro. -HUGE-...but that coincides with the difference in price, so that has to be taken into consideration as well. Windows is typically ruined by the hardware on which it is installed, and this is never more glaringly apparent than on a laptop. Garbage drivers, flimsy construction, cheap hardware. After unboxing the XPS, the first thing I thought was 'This...is it?' The XPS 15 looked awesome on paper, and I've seen lots of praise for it in its respective forum. However, having one sitting side-by-side next to a MBP, the XPS seems like a cheap joke.

If all you want, is to experience OSX then buy a Mac Mini, it's far cheaper. ;)

Well, for me experience was rather perfect except for some hardware problems.
