ok so my macbook is supposed to get here saturday and i was wondering how i could use my old desktop to backup my MB. i would like to be able to do it wirelesly over the network if thats possible so i dont have to buy an external enclosure. i figured i would have to make a 30gb FAT partition but then how would i access the partition on the mac? thx guys.

You can format the hard drive as NTFS since you would be accessing it via SMB and through Windows.

What you can't do is access, more specifically, write to, an NTFS external drive without Windows OS.

Wireless will be slow. Consider hardwiring the "server" via ethernet and connecting the Mac to it, unless you are only going to be writing smaller files somewhat infrequently.

As count said, just share a folder on your Windows PC and then connect to it using finder. Just be sure you are in the same workgroup. It's pretty easy. And the format of the drive does not matter.
