Can any one give a review of the difference between office 2008 and openoffice.org

I dont use microsoft outlook any more . So forget that in office 2008.
My need is mainly to use word, power point and excel.

ive been using openoffice since i got this computer months ago. i love it. im not much of a fan of company software (except apple. and adobe ps, i just love it).

but you have to remember to save it as a .doc not a .odt

    that gets annoying.

If I were you I would try to get MS Office. It truly does work really well, and even uses less computer resources (hardware) than its competitors like OpenOffice...

I should be getting my MBP Friday and the first thing I'm doing is using iWork to see how it interacts with my MS Office pro files. I'll let you know, since this is my biggest worry about changing over to MAC.

OpenOffice.org is a pretty decent office suite. It has almost everything an average user need. It's not as featured pack (templates, clip arts, etc.) as Word 2008, but for $400 less you can do basically the same thing. It's open for user to develop plugins, which is one of my favorite part : ) Version 3 just launched and it has native support for OSX along with Microsoft's .docx format.

So basically if you just use the office suite for basic things like typing letter, reports, making budget spread sheet, slide presentation, etc. OpenOffice.org will do fine for you. If you need more feature like custom templates, etc. you'd have to get Microsoft's version or Apple's. I'd suggest you download it and try it though : )

iWork and Office '08 have a trial version. Play around with them for 30 days along with OpenOffice.org and decide which is right for you. When you do get them, if you're a student remember to get that discount.

I've harped on this before, so I'll keep it short. I can barely tolerate Office 08. The only reason I bought it (and it is still on my computer) is for compatibility reasons. My University is a heavy Microsoft product user and pretty much everything is .doc or .docx. I simply can't afford to mess around with funky .doc files in openoffice. However, as soon as I graduate Office 08 is going in the trash bin and openoffice is moving in (or iWork).

I find office 08 to be slow, clunky (hate the **** floating palette), and just....crap.

Office 08 is proven to be less demanding than OpenOffice like I said earlier, so this argument just doesn't work...

Office 2007 for windows is probably the best piece of software Microsoft has put out in years, and maybe ever. I would go with it on the mac without a second's thought.

Yeah......I have yet to use either but for piece of mind working in the corporate windows world, I'll prob end up going with MS office --- but I'll give iWorks a fair shot once my MBP gets here.

Open office is free. So if you are typing papers and such, then it should be fine.

If you are like me and you get Microsoft Office free from your workplace, then get Office :)

I've been using OpenOffice for a couple of years now and the recient release of v3 make it the best its ever been.

Open office lets you open most MS Office files. Most files open directly or have an auto import that produces perfect results in many cases and some issues in fewer cases. You can't save back to the latest MS Office .x file types yet, so you'll have to save in a previous MS office (2003 or earlier) or other format that OO supports.

In order of most to least compatable I'd say Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access.

For personal use I would not hesitate to use OpenOffice for all my needs. For corporate use, not all features map well and there can be minor to significant compatability issues. I find OpenOffice faster and more reliable than Office 2009 for Mac but work forces me to use MS Office for compatibility reasons.

Very good reviews from every one. I decided to try open office and found that when i open few files, ( especially from my work) , i find them a bit out of shape.

So i am deciding to have openoffice to open files and ihave my VMware with windows always running to edit any .
I also use an application called reference manager for my research days and it does not support. So another reason to continue to use office 2007 in vmware.

I have iwork and office 08; I find MS words takes too long to start... like 20-30 secs.. on the other hand, iwork is a good simplistic software. However, MS office 08 indeed is a better software for ummm more than just typing notes.

So what would be better buying vmware and running office 2007 OR just buying office 2008? I already have office 2007 so buying vmware might be cheaper than buying office again. Thoughts? Performance hit? yay or nay?

for some reason when I try to print 'handout' slides of a presentation, OpenOffice throws a fit. I'll take Office '04 over OpenOffice anyday (personal preference). Especially now that you can pick up Office '04 for Macs for around $30

That being said, I'm still not used to the new Microsoft Office interface yet. I think they're trying way too hard to look sleek and are sacrificing functionality.

I am not going to buy office 2008 ( at least for the time being ) .
I am more than happy running office 2007 in vm ware ( i have spent 40 $ on vmware but also spent around 169 $ to upgrade ram from 2gb to 4gb )

If u have only 2gb ram, it may not be a good option to run both the OS's at the same time ( i use vista, but people who use XP have different experience )

The only problem that i face is that when i download a word document ( just and eg) , i cannot open it directly from boot camp . i have to save it first to some place ( like desktop ) and then right click on that and then select to open it from ms word in the boot camp.

OK thx drgopoos I'll just get office 2008 then (or if my school offers it for free? At least a student discount)
