I've waited and waited for the new update of the macbook pro and now I don't really know what to think. The update didn't really do anything for me. My question is: is the old model macbook pro a better deal than buying the new model? All I'm using this for is college life and recording music with my band. Thanks for any imput.

For the same price of course you'd want to get the new one. But, the old ones are so heavily discounted in some places now that they are a much better value.

I was able to get the old MBP base model for around $2000 CAD taxes in, with applecare, .mac, iWork 08 and a Tucano Sleeve case included. The same bundle based on the new model would have cost me upwards of $500 more which is not worth the difference IMO.

I got the base model 2.2Ghz MBP from Amazon.com last night for <$1450. There's no tax at Amazon either. So at least $600 cheaper than buying one of the new refreshes at Apple.com.

Enlighten us. How'd you do that? That particular model shows $1686 on their site.

Theres a $150 rebate at Amazon on top of that price. There is also a "Gold Box" trick at Amazon to get another 5% off the price. You can find out more about the trick at SlickDeals.net forum since there is a thread for the MacBooks on sale at Amazon. I also have an Amazon Visa card so i get another 3% off with that. Came out to be a little more than $1400 shipped overnight for $3.99 since I have Prime.

If you can get the older generation MacBook Pro for a significantly lower price, I'd go for it. If its about the same, I'd just go for the new MacBook Pro. The new upgrades are not amazingly significant, but nonethless they still are improvements :).

Probably pretty soon but you might as well just order it from the Apple store if you want one of the new Penryn based ones so that you can customize it to your liking. They aren't going to be discounted at Amazon like the previous gen is now. They will be full price.
