My wife just got my new macbook but I am out of the Country for a month and would like her to start using it. She is timid about starting it up and going through the set up as she never used a mac before. What will the set up all be about? She read something about the internet and email accounts in the book that will be asked. We have a wirless dlink router and cable internet. I dont want any email set up on the computer yet so how will she avoid that during the first set up and the internet thing? any other surprises in store for her.. ..just wish I was home to see it..lol thanks in advance :)

What's your name? What's your password? And then all the wireless stuff too. I probably forgot somethings though :[

It's a very very simple set up. She should be done in a couple of minutes really. You don't need to supply anything but your user name and password(and your system password) in the initial set up.

When she turns it on, she will have to watch a somewhat lengthy Apple commercial and then pick language, a default user name and a default password. You should choose carefully because you can rename accounts but the directories don't automatically get renamed so using finder on a machine which was set up as george but was renamed fred, fred's home directory is called george. She might have to pick dvd region code but this might only come up if she plays a dvd. That's about it. The built in software is enough to do the basics. If your Macbook is connected directly to a cable modem or used at free hotspots, I would tell her to enable the firewall. That's about it. You might need to explain the finder and dock to her or she might go looking for the dreaded start button.

I don't think you've forgotten anything, but, a password isn't necessary, IIRC (it has been a while since I set up my last Mac). I think you can just click right through the password, ignoring it. In any case, there are no passwords on my Macs (they don't leave the house, and nobody but family uses them anyway).

Oh yeah, passwords aren't necessary. To tell you the truth, I totally winged what you had to do. I just guessed and assumed it had to similar windows. :p

Its very simple, really. She doesn't need to set up an email if I remember correctly. I wouldn't worry about it, and if she can't figure it out she can go back and not set it up :).
