I looked at the new MBP 17" today and was dissapointed in the screen quality compared to the 15"

It was rather dark and hard to see, even more so when viewing a movie.
brightness ws turned all the way up, the apple group had no idea, but agreeded.

I hope this was a bad example on display. Not a single retailer locally will have any on display for quite a while so I'll be buying blind. :(

My 17" MBP display is a little darker than my 15" MBP (both unibody), but it isn't dark by any means. The machine you saw may have been defective.

    Hi folks,

same: yesterday I received my 17" MacBook Pro Antiglare Unibody. The Display is so dark - it is out of question! I have the direct comparison between a 15" Unibody, the new 17" Unibody and a 24" LED Cinemadisplay.

Could anybody tell me how to post pictures here in the forum? I took some.

One more point: while pressing the Brightnessbutton on the 15" I registered 16 clear steps; pressing Brightness on the 17" there are only 3 clear steps and about 5 some tiny steps to increase the Brightness.

It seems so that the screen dimming funktion of the book is also not working.

    Ideas?

    Paulchen

You guys all probably have the Antiglare one. It is known to be much less bright than the glare version. I have the glare one and it is BRIGHT!

I don't think so. The apple store wants 50 dollars more for antiglare. The display model I looked at was 2799.00

    This is an apple store

It was the same as the previous gen mbp as well. 17" was always a tad bit darker than the 15".

Didn't they say that they use the previous screens for the anticlare screens?

thats strange, but they do use higher res screen compared to the on on the 15" so a little dimmer is to be expected. but i saw umm photo of the last gen 1920x1200 screen and they are quite bright. and i never heard people complaining. not sure what happen with the new one. never seen one in person.

Its the same as before last gen 17" vs. the 15". The 15" was a bit brighter like a notch brighter.

I specifically remembered this after having owned both. I have a strong feeling there is no update for brighter backlighting.

I personally have the 17" anti-glare model and it seems adiquetly bright, if not too bright (usualy run it at 80" brightness)
