Hey, I am so close to finally settling on a notebook. I am probably going to get the 14" ibook, (I like the powerbook but to expensive for me). My question is, do I need a superdrive. I would likely only use it to rip some dvd's to my computer so that I might do a bit of editing for some anime music video's. But I don't want to buy any additional software, so does idvd or whatever the pre-installed software is, will it rip dvd's? Also since I'll need excel and word, I had read in a review of the ibook here, that it would have a lot of issues running ms office. Is that true? I hope not because I really want my ibook [ :D]

You don't need a superdrive. I don't know if iDVD rips superdrives, but I'm sure that there are many free (shareware, freeware) programs that will help you to do this. Also, there is absolutely no problem with running MSOffice products on an iBook, unless the problem is created by the user. Not that you asked for any advice, but did you know that the 12" ibook gets better battery life than the 14", aside from being lighter? Remember that Apple's 12" and 14" portables have the same screen resolution, so you won't be able to see more of anything on the 14" iBooks screen - it will only allow things to look bigger (and perhaps fuzzier).

not that anybody noted, but I went down to the apple store, and a sales rep. told me that idvd will not rip a dvd to your laptop. On a good note though, this now means i think I'm going to uprgrade from the ibook 14" with a superdrive, to a 15" powerbook with a combo drive.
