A coworker had the dreaded nVidia problem on his 17 inch MBP. I think that there's more room for airflow in the 17 inch MBPs which means that they are less susceptible to the nVidia failure but it will come sooner or later.
He brought it into the local Apple Store and they diagnosed it as the nVidia problem and they are replacing his motherboard at nVidia's expense. His MBP is 3 years and 50 days old so they are fixing it even though it is outside the extended warranty period. I suspect that nVidia is doing this to avoid class action suits.
On the Dell forums, Dell is giving customers new XPS 16 computers as replacements for the XPS 1330s that have had numerous nVidia failures. My 17 inch MBP will be three-years-old next February so I hope that Apple/nVidia will continue to replace motherboards for free far into the future. Of course I wouldn't mind upgrading to a Unibody but my current system works just fine and I can see myself using it for the next five years.

It's informational for those with computers that are older than three years wondering if Apple/nVidia will cover failures beyond three years. -
the motherboard replacement is actually more of an Apple expense, Nvidia only provided enough money cover the cost of the GPU. Most of the manufacturer stumped up for the replacement motherboard cost, shipping, handling, labour and customer complaints....
