I have tried the microsoft msn and it doesn't let me video chat at all. I downloaded amsn and you can do video but no audio. What other choices do I have out there that do both video and audio with people running msn on windows based computers.

    skype or ichat

those are pretty much the only two programs to do video chat with.

Why doesn't msn or yahoo fix this issue? I can see msn because it's a competitor from microsoft but why is it not fixed for yahoo? Yahoo seems very good at upgrading this for the windows side.

All Microsoft products for Mac are still made by Microsoft, so it's certainly not because of any "competitor" reason that MSN on a PC can't video chat with MSN on a Mac and vice versa. I can only imagine there are compatibility issues that they have not managed to overcome (within their budget).

I'd imagine Yahoo think the Mac is too small a userbase for them to bother with fixing that, but it could be anything there too really.

I think that microsoft isnt updating MSN: Mac because they want to sway mac users to windows...they only make this kind of software for Mac (WMP, IE, etc) because its good advertising for windows (in my opinion...)

Try Skype, it's supposedly gotten really good lately. Although iChat works great if your friend has a mac...

I've heard you can get iChat to work with an Aim PC user. It just requires a little tinkering.

You can get a Jabber account to talk to people using AIM, MSN, or Yahoo. The Jabber protocol works (audio/video) with iChat. It's a little work, but worth it.

What type of work has to be done with it? For right now I'll be happy with text conversations but I'd like to be able to video chat with my g/f when she's away on her conference later this month.

the easiest would be for both of you to get skype. less configuration, and it is free and multiplatform.
