i recently switched from PC to a G4 Powerbook. I like everything except that I've really started to take issue with Quicktime's inability to play so many of the mpeg's that I download. I constantly get the "Can't open the file _____ because it is not a file that Quicktime understands." Trying to open the same files with the OS X version of Windows Media Player gets the same results. For a machine that seems to recognize almost everything you throw at it, this is a frustrating shortcoming to say the least. Is there a Quicktime patch I need to download/purchase? Are mpeg layer 2 files just a no-go on Macs? Any help would be appreciated.

    Try this:
    http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=84358&release_id=227046

It is called Media Player Classic and it is opensource.

I don't have the software necessary to run .exe files. Moreover, I'm still learning this software. Is there no way around paying the $20 for the mpeg 2 playback component from the apple store? If not, its pretty ridiculous that Apple doesn't include this capability when mpeg 2's originated in 1994 and layer 4's in 1998.

Head over to VersionTracker and do a search for mpeg. (http://tinyurl.com/3ons2) VLC, Mplayer, and a few other opensource players might fix your problem. another thing worth investing in is Quicktime Pro for $30. With QTPro you can save the mpegs as native files (.mov) or MPEGs (.mpg, .mpeg) so that playback is assured. VersionTracker is my favorite source for Mac software updates. Another software source is Mac Update (http://www.macupdate.com/index.php). Just think of these sites as the Tucows/download.com for Mac users.
