I'm wondering if an mp3 player that has windows as a requirement and not leopard will still show up as an external hard drive in leopard or simply not be recognized. Thanks for your help, this will help me with my Christmas shopping. :D

Yeah, there's lots of MP3 players that don't work with Macs, if that's what you mean. Most do not show up on Macs at all.

If you set the MP3 player to be viewable as an external (I know I can do this with my ancient 3rd gen iPod), it should at least show up as a hard disk.

I've got a Cowon D2. It shows up as a flash drive, and the expandable SD slot shows up as a second flash drive.

It depends on the way the player handles files. If it's like the iPod, then you'll need special software in order to put files on it. I think the Zune is like this, also.

All my MP3 players show up as external HDs. Although Zune probably won't because it's Microsoft.

Hey, its the same doubt people had over iTunes for Windows :p. But of course, Apple is more inclined to have iTunes for Windows than Microsoft is for Zune for Mac OS X, as the Windows market is so much larger.

The new Zunes aren't terribly bad, actually. It will hopefully drive Apple to innovate further itself.

I would get a Zune, but the software that handles it sux. Would be cool if it could sync with Windows Media Player or something.

It syncs with its own Zune software.

Yeah. It's a shame that it only syncs with *cough*Zune software*cough*, which is a joke.

No, there are other things that can sync with iPods if you download plugins...like I think Foobar for Windows can sync with iPods if you download a plugin.

Anything that supports UMS file transfers (also called MSC) should show up as an external hard drive under Mac OS X or Linux (or Windows, for that matter).

Another common protocol is MTP, which is not so well-supported under OS X and Linux (although some solutions may be available).

Some mp3 players support both UMS/MSC and MTP.

The iPod uses UMS with its own layer on top of it, so you need iPod-aware software to sync. As Sam mentioned, there are some programs and plug-ins available. (However, those solutions are not officially supported by Apple.) The Zune requires the Zune software to sync... and unfortunately it's Windows-only.
