most universities offer microsoft office at a greatly discounted rate (atleast in the U.S.)

mine is 15 for Office XP, and 5 for Office for mac,

so at $5 i'd say its worth it :)

I strongly reccommend that you purchase your iBook at Apple's store for education and the software at your campus computer store for a big discount on both.

Mac Office is basically essential, the first software that I would buy if I have a Mac.

You could try OpenOffice. It is free and compatible with MS Office.

OpenOffice 2.0 is really nice. I would recommend trying it before you spend a dime on MS Office.

OpenOffice is pretty nice, you could give that a try. I believe Apple has "KeyNote" or something like that, but it's supposedly not as good as Powerpoint and KeyNote isn't even included on Apple computers. You need to buy iWork.
Try OpenOffice, if you don't like it, get Office Mac discounted.

No there is not. But you can download Open Office! Open office has a presentation viewer that reads powerpoints.

I'll be honest. If you plan on doing basic stuff like powerpoint...get hte Mac! I needed my 700m for hte same thing, and I could have gotten away with a Mac easily. But if you really want to have the windows office feel, get office mac, it will be worth it to you. The interface of Open office is slightly different and you wont feel as if you're using powerpoint, even though its essentially the same program.

I am not totally sure if this is is a standard included program or not, but when i was broswing the applications folder, i found a program suite callled AppleWorks 6. Which would be comparable to microsoft "works" for windows. But i just tried opening a powerpoint with, but no dice. It did however seem to be able to open excel and word files. Yes, there is the free openoffice, but as a uni student it is possible to get MS office pro for very cheap.

And keynote does come with the machine as part of the fully functional iWork demo which lasts for 30 days. Then you need to buy a key for it.

i personally think office on mac is better than office for windows, and i use windows most of the time. I wish they would port mac office onto windows.

OSX would be the most advance OS in the world (except from those Linux OS customized for specified purposes), yet, MS Office just would be the most popular application in you daily life. since now MS Office get an OSX compatible version... to use it in OSX would be really convenient & free from isolation. i love apple way, however, the way must be walkable & connect to the others!!
