System: Macbook Pro(2010 refresh) c2d w/ 4gb memory .....fully up to date.

Please excuse the ignorance of the question.

Problem:When I run a slightly intensive program like photoshop for example I will notice that my physical ram drops down from 3+gb down to 300mb (give or take a couple 100mb).

Question: Even after closing photoshop(force quit etc..) I am still left with 300mb of available memory, unless I restart my computer.......so the question is if I am able to regain this memory without the need of restarting my system????????

You are aware clicking the red button doesn't actually close the program on OSX, right? It only closes the active window, you have to right-click (err, Command+click) the icon in the Dock and "Close Application" to close it completely. The "still running" status of an application is shown by the little blue dot underneath it in the Dock.

Though if you launch a program that needs the RAM, whatever's being used by inactive applications should be paged out to disk.

the official Apple term is Secondary click... it can be a two finger click.. a right click.. a cmd click... whatever, but its the secondary click not the primary.

but I have seen many people have that problem.. not understanding how to close an app.

you can close it from the Dock like that, or from the top menu... or if its the active app showing int he top menubar, its easiest to just hit CMD+Q and it quits.

does it happen in multiple apps? or just Photoshop?

also do not go by "free" memory. When large apps are closed, memory released is not put back as free memory, its just set as inactive. New programs can get memory from inactive memory just fine, so it shouldn't cause a problem. basically consider your free memory as "free" + "inactive"

restart your system... take a screenshot of your memory in Activity Monitor.
Run Photoshop and do some stuff then close it and take another screenshot of the memory in Activity Monitor... post both up so we can see them.
    just simple shots like this...

And yes I made sure to quit photoshop before taking the screenshot. The only way I regained my memory was by restarting my system.

Sounds like there might be a problem with Photoshop.
