hotmail is free, but the free accounts don't allow you to set up your Mac OS email with them. you need to pay for your account to unlock more features

Well, you can always access Hotmail through a browser, but through the Mail application, no.

I would recommend you switch to GMail. Its web-based but can also be configured to work with the Mail app. I just switched to it, its great.

Also deciding which e-mail to use for a new MBP, why is a web based e-mail (G-mail) so good. I'm not a big fan of leaving my mail on the web.

The two main mail clients are Apple Mail and Mozilla Thunderbird. Try those, they're the major ones.

And I like web based mail (although I'm also using the Apple Mail with GMail) because I can access it anywhere. I go to school, etc. and don't want to be carrying my MacBook everywhere, so instead I just go to any computer that has internet and I can access my email.

Well yes.I'm not sure exactly how it works, but I don't need to see my e-mail when I don't have my MB and I don't like leaving e-mails on the web for security reasons. Maybe I just don't get if there is a differnce between e-mail systems.

Okay, so there's two main ways to access your email; through the web browser, or through a mail client.

Web based email is accessible on any computer connected to the internet. That's why it is convenient, as you can be anywhere in the world, in any place, and you can access the same email.

With a mail client, you can only access your email on computers with mail clients configured for your email address.

GMail hits the sweet spot with these two though; it has web based email as well as POP3 support. So you can configure your mail client with your GMail account, but you can also access all your mail through a web browser. That's what I'm doing now.

You do realise that your email is "left on the web" whatever email system you use. If you use your ISP's mail system it in simply on your ISP's servers, if you use Gmail it is simply on Gmail's servers.

I have tried to get this answered on the software link to no avail. I have used Gmail for over 4 months while keeping my AOL account. On Gmail I get a ton of spam (in the spam folder) and AOL virtually no spam what gives?

I would suggest gmail because it is fast and secure.
I use imap to hook up my apple mail with gmail so that whenever I read the email on my macbook pro, the server will know that I have read it and make it as readed.
I still use hotmail but I will check my email by web browser.

I wasn't asking which mail to use, I was looking for some explanation as to why I'm getting a ton of spam on Gmail and virtually no spam on AOL. Everyone claims that Gmail is so much better.

Well, if your spam is going into the Spam folder, then Gmail is working quite well, insofar as it is identifying what is spam and keeping it away from you. That said, it's damn handy being able to dig through that folder once a month or so, just to make sure that all the mail that has been tagged spam is, indeed, spam.

Now, concerning why you're getting so much of it, it could be anything from it's a common username, to you used it with some group who has then sold it to everyone and their third cousin, or you might have had a 'friend' sign you up for crap that you wouldn't ever want.

I use gmail for some purposes, but I'm not someone who thinks that it's the best of all solutions. It's a decent free solution, but decent =/ good.

gmail has Imap, and works flawlessly between my computer/iphone.

that certainly makes sense, but while I have set up Gmail I almost never use it. I would say that I have sent maybe 3 Gmails since the account was opened. As for my aol account I use that all the time. So while I understand what you are saying, I don't think it is the reason for the spams. Most of the spam contain a lot of question marks. And yes gmail is doing its job by sending them to spam, but I can't be deleting and searching the spam folder everyday.

This is going to sounds like I work for Google (which I don't), but why bother deleting the spam folder? It's automatically cleaned by google every week or two, if I recall.

I'm really not trying to defend gmail here - if the AOL account is serving you better, stick with it. The only other thing that comes to mind is that you have some name associated with the gmail account that is relatively common and, as such, high on spammers' lists. It could also be that, if you have friends who have your gmail address, and their email accounts have been compromised/they've inadvertently shared their address books, then your email could have been disclosed in that fashion. At work, the sharing of address books most often comes when people sign up for social networking services, and then include/invite everyone from their address books. Those services, in turn, have a tendency to resell the addresses ;)
