I'll try to explain it. it was alot of trial and error so hopefully this can help you. My settings might not be what your looking for.
first in system preference/network have it set to automatic.
then in sharing set it for personal file sharing and hit start under services
Then in accounts setup a new account for the person with other comp. give them admin access.
do all of this for both computers.
What i don't remember is how i got the 2 comps to first acknowledger each other. I think when you goto networks in system preference or in finder it does it automatically or you hit a browse button and it will auto find the other comp.

Once the other comp appears in finder in network all you will beable to access is a dropbox.
To allow full access you have to goto folders and rightclick to goto get info
    here you can goto permissions:
open the lock and change the permissions.
for example i wanted both computers to have access to my user folder with my music and documents etc.
so i went to permissions on the folder called myshkin(me) and changed the owner from myshkin to group admin and gave it read and write.

if you have some questions i could prolly make it more clear certain parts
