The 13in MBP will play 1080i/1080p content but not in their original format since the screen resolution of the of the MBP 13 cannot support it, therefore any 1080 resolution movies you play will be downscaled. This is the same with any laptop you buy. If your screen res is not full HD then any HD content will be downscaled if the resolution does not support it.
However, if you connect your laptop to a HDTV that is Full HD then it will play any HD file you play on your laptop at its native HD res.

I have a base 2009 13" MBP. It can play 1080p but you definitely need to get the "right" playback software. VLC (same as PC) is the best all around video player, but I find it stutters with 1080p video playback. Plex works well, but I find the full HTPC a bit of overkill just for quick playback. MPlayer OSX Extended IMHO is the best at 1080p playback once you set the buffer up to it's max 256MB setting in the preferences.

That being said, I use VLC for 720p and less for everyday use and MPlayer OSX Extended for anything that is 1080p.
