My gf has a macbook, an older version and it is coming to its end of its 2 year warranty and it is starting to have some heat/cpu problems. Seems a lot of things are going wrong with it and I am just curious if Mac would switch her laptop out with a new one (obviously not a macbook pro or anything like that) but one with equal specs? or would they try to replace the cpu and fan and all the that good stuff?

macs don't have 2 year warranties through apple.
it is either 1 year or 3.
that said, assuming your warranty is through apple they will most likely repair the laptop as opposed to offering you a new one. the only time they would ever offer a new laptop would be if the cost of insured repair exceeded the cost of the new machine. this is unlikely, even if multiple things are not working.
I know this from first hand experience. My total repair bills (covered by apple's insurance) for my laptop have well exceeded the price of my machine, but the *cost* of repair for apple was relatively low compared to the *cost* of the machine. -
i think he's referring to the additional 2year warranty. i believe it depends on the sales rep who talks to you. if you're lucky enough to get a nice person, then there's a high probability they'll replace your machine. don't act as a geek (even if you are not) as the geniuses tend to get fed up and may simply tell you that you have broken your machine.

I have heard that Apple used to have a "whisper" policy that if a machine suffered three major failures during warranty they would replace it rather than repair it on #4. I don't know if that is still in effect or not, and the repairs really did have to be significant, like major component (hard drive, screen, etc.) failures, not just small issues which could be worked around. Still it never hurts to ask...

actually, AFAIK, there is a law which makes them replace it after 3 repairs.Am I right?

Lemon law. It only applies to 3 repairs on the same defect/part.
If i brought my unit in 3 times for different items, and another thing broke the 4th time, lemon law would not apply. -
In EU (at least in Poland) it can be even different defect/part and You can choose exchange or Your money back. Of course it sounds simple but sometimes seller doesn't want to give up so easy.

Good Question. Normally we would replace the whole computer with a newer one if you had 3 major repairs on one year. However for your issue we would just refer to an Apple Store and end up replacing the hardware that needs replacing. Other then that, I wouldn't' count on getting a new computer.
