I'm looking for some suggestions, here is the situation.

I am a graduate student in an apple based lab, my supervisor has all the programs for the mac platform. The ones I'm particularly interested in are Adobe InDesign (for layouts of my thesis when I get there) and Delta Graph (like excel but better) and EndNote (reference manager)

I am really only looking for a notebook that will satisfy my needs for these three programs, and probably will need to run an ftp program or connect to our unix based server.

I doubt I need top of the line for this, and so am wondering what is the minimum requirement system that I could use for this. E.g. what version of an ibook will handle these meger demands?

AND where can I look for a refurbished notebook - what is the general opinion of refurbs? (i'm in Canada)

Someone mentioned the apple website has a sale page in a thread I read, but I couldn't find it, is it still available?

    Thanks

    Marianne

    Hi Marianne,

There are several places that sell refurb PowerBooks: Apple, Small Dog Electronics, PowerMax, Expercom, and MegaMacs. The best site for locating deals on refurbs is dealmac.com. (http://dealmac.com/) Here is a list of recent deals from the dealmac site: http://tinyurl.com/6fp7r

Small Dog has a deal on a 15in PB: http://tinyurl.com/455mc or (smalldog.com) Apple's refurb page is here: http://tinyurl.com/6x8nb go to the Store link from the front page. The Apple refurb store for the UK is here: http://tinyurl.com/22z8t Also on the www.apple.com/uk/ front page, click on refurbs (recycle symbol on right).

I'm not sure what limitations you face living in Canada. Some things may not be available for you, other items may only be available for you since you live north of the border. Small Dog is based in Vermont. They probably have a fair number of Canadian customers, so I would try them first. An alternative for you since you are at University would be to look into what education discounts are available. It may make more sense (cents) to buy new with the edu rate so that your Powerbook is more current for a longer time.

    Happy hunting!
