i got a new HD and leopard so will the leopard install format the drive or should i format the drive before i install it?

You can use the Leopard DVD to format the new drive. Follow the instruction from the Hard Drive Replacement Do-It-Yourself Manual (PDF).
Boot from the Leopard DVD, choose your Language, choose Utilities > Disk Utility from the Menu Bar, select the drive, click the partition tab, click Options, make sure GUID is selected, name the volume, and click the Partition button. Then Quit Disk Utility and install Leopard. -
yep you can do it right from the Leopard disk, or the install, when you go to install (if you haven't formatted), it will probably say that no proberly formatted disk is available for the install (a little ! over the HDD most likely) and you will just need to do an erase and install, which will format the HDD just as disk utility would.
never done it personally but I can't imagine it would differ much from that or what Xander had mentioned. procede without to much worry. -
Leopard will do it as part of the install.
