I turn my MacBook Pro off. Throw it in a backpack and go ride my bike somewhere.

When off, are the hard drive heads and stuff parked?

Is this potentially bad for the hard drive?

The heads should be parked, yes. But I would still avoid excessive jolting if possible, I'm sure it wouldn't be entirely safe for the computer, and there's probably a limit to how much jolting the mechanism that parks the heads can handle too.

MB/MBPs have HD locks. When you turn it off, or chuck it accross the room, the HD will automatically lock to prevent damage.
